This is a quote from Fates and Furies that stuck with me:
"Marriage is made of lies. Kind ones, mostly. Omissions. If you give voice to the things you think every day about your spouse, you'd crush them to paste."
That sounds sort of awful, but I think there is a lot of truth there. I am curious what others who are happily partnered think about this.

I don't say everything negative to my partner. I pick my battles.

I think that one's marriage reflects one's opinion of oneself. If I see myself as loveable, intelligent and worthy, motivated to live one's life with joy and passion, the marriage will reflect that.
We are often horribly cruel to ourselves and treat others the same way.
As Cicero said, “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.”

The quote is definitely more relevant to the marriage in the book, and I would characterize it as a reasonably good marriage. I guess the quote is also extreme, perhaps on purpose, for the dramatic effect.
Here's my version, that is more in keeping with my personal reality:
A marriage, even between the most honest and trusting of partners, will contain some component of lies. Kind ones, mostly. Omissions. If you give voice to all of the things you think every day about your spouse (or other loved ones for that matter), both bad and good, in the guise of honesty, you will end up cruelly inflicting hurt on those you love most.

I've not been married, nor lived with anyone, but I can only understand the constant carping and criticizing some people (often women, in my experience) persist in as symptomatic of their inability to escape a bad situation. I would have never criticized my partner publicly (he wasn't perfect, nor am I), and the only time my mother said a word against my father (whom she loved dearly) was when he over-pruned her rose bushes.
