Three White Horses, Andrew Bird, if you consider 2012 new? But it was new to me.

I suppose I consider new any artist that has been around for not more than 10-15 years, maybe 20? Anyone older than that is part of the previous generation. Still potentially "new", at least if they are still making new stuff, but with a different mindset from a different generation.

Some of my other "new" favorite artists are:

-The Avett Brothers. Their Tiny Desk Concert for NPR was amazing. That performance of "Laundry Room" was way better than the version on the album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abQRt6p8T7g
-Mumford & Son

Not necessarily new, but new to me is Gregory Porter. Saw him on The Graham Norton Show and fell in love with his voice and he seems like a really genuinely nice guy. I'm not a fan of jazz, but he can sing the alphabet and I'll listen!

Over the past weeks since I initially posted this I've been exploring AJR's complete discography (videography?) and I can say at this point that 1) I'm completely in love with the J of AJR. 2) I doubt that many people older than me will understand what he's trying to say with his music. and 3) they are willing to offer an opinion about the current zeitgiest: "if you're effing racist then don't come to my show." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1noRCUvsrM

I started an AJR channel on Pandora maybe a month ago with the goal of only liking stuff I'd not heard before so that it doesn't end up playing all the same songs as every other pandora channel I've made. I seem to have succeeded at that effort. Surprisingly this has resulted in me liking several songs by an almost 31 year old rapper named NF. This afternoon pandora served up one of his songs while I was at work and I hit the replay button a couple of times, turning the volume up each time. (no, it didn't turn into a one man dance party, as sometimes happens in my home office...) I think one of the things I like about rap is that the better rappers are more like poets that happen to have an interesting musical background to accompany the poetry.

I agree that the best rappers are poets, as all good lyricists are. For an example of deft lyrics, I nominate Weird Al's Word Crimes.
Macklemore, being local, is someone I occasionally listen to and enjoy.

I'm not the most discerning of listeners; I found NF's video frenetic, in the way some rap music is. But I'm very fond of Eminem's 8 Mile, which strikes me as similar.
