We've been buying organic eggs for $2.99 a dozen and it is money well spent. I eat most of my eggs hard boiled, and you can really tell the difference if it's a high quality egg. At that price, it works out to 25 cents for a nice bit of morning protein.

That'svery interesting, RoRug. Do you check your eggs at the cooler, or do you wait until you are at the checkout counter, with 3 other people waiting somewhat patiently behind you? Because see--I've had an egg-checker find what they considered to be a faulty egg, and had to wait while the cashier summoned a boy to run back and get another carton of eggs. Oh, yeah. Sure have.

The bagger checks the eggs. I don't have to. After all, I can check them but then someone bumps my cart and one cracks.

My eggs are all organic, free-range, cruelty-free, and cost $0.

(If you don't include the cost of the land, property taxes on the land, the cost of construction and maintenance of the coop and yard, the mink/otter/dog/hawk control efforts, the cost of ownership of the herding dog that keeps the flock safe, feed cost, and vet cost.)

We don't have chicken coops like bae, although we've considered it, but we do buy from from folks that do. Opening up the carton is like an Easter egg hunt with eggs of different hues and sizes. One of our "distributors" is a little more polished with actual labels with her farm's name on the cartons, but the other is just a lady with a bunch of chickens and a lot of eggs and reused cartons with the name crossed off and their farm name written above it with Sharpie marker. We know we pay more for locally-produced eggs, but not much more--$2.50/doz but it's money well-spent.
