    Memorial Day

We had our small town parade of scout troops, county officials, fire and rescue trucks, old cars, old tractors, etc. this morning. I am always struck at the quietness of this parade versus the others throughout the year. The younger kids always ask why there are no sirens and probably don't quite understand the explanation, but - as with most things - it's a learning process.

Anyway, I am filled with gratitude and respect for all those who have lost their lives serving our country - and I mean across ALL services, not just military.

Yes, it is a very important day. When it seems like the world is going crazy, it's inspiring to recall the brave heroes who gave their all in service. Grateful.

I had my own private observance of Memorial Day, remembering a certain US Army soldier in the War of the Rebellion.

I do not believe he would recognize this country that at one time awarded him medals for his service.

What would he think of 11 mass shootings? 7 people dead, 49 injured. (Sat, Sun, Mon)

Probably wondering what the heck is going on with people.

As a kid, we used to visit my grandfathers grave a week or two before, and then her siblings the weekend of. I was in my late 20's, when I found out what the framed flag with a gold star meant.
War, school shootings, just senseless violence all around.

I took a vacation day Friday and we decorated our parents' graves that afternoon. Did anyone see the information on Taps Across America? CBS did a spot on it. at 3:00 p.m. on Memorial Day, people all over play taps on their instrument of choice. It's quite moving.

Beckyliz, I didn't see the CBS spot but did notice in the neighborhood groups that several people were going to different areas in town, most notably some of the smaller cemeteries and inviting other trumpet players to join them. Thought it was pretty cool.

I have a friend whose son did Taps Across America the last couple of years. It's such a moving idea. Now to make sure these trained soldiers etc. are given every bit of help before they are dismissed from the services. Much like boot camp, but for deprogramming. They should not have to fight for anything!
