I think that's the secret behind the "blue zones." Beside eating more meat than the book would have you believe (Okinawans love their pork!), lifestyles--lifelong, often strenuous exercise, clean air and water, strong social and family ties, and a simple life, minimizing stress all play a part.
I have read the blue zones. My very rough assessment is that you have diet, exercise, support from your tribe, environmental exposures, and genetics. You can only fool genetics for so long. And can maybe slight a couple of the others and get away with it, but they all matter and you start spinning the wheel of fortune.
