My forced experiment of living without a computer

My computer finally crashed so after much consternation, I decided to buy a refurb Mac mini. That was about two weeks ago and the FedEx shipping was all messed up so day by day I learned to live without one. I don't like doing much on my phone other than texting and email so being without the desktop was a real test. After a day or so, I felt much more productive and began thinking of other things to do besides looking at forums or going down rabbit holes. I actually got things done and started to get some creative ideas!! It was interesting to enjoy the slow release of not being tethered to the internet. Anyway, it showed up today and here I sit in front of it once again. But this time...

I am just relieved I got all files transferred from my old computer operating Windows 7 to the new Mac before it crashed. It hasn’t crashed yet, but just yesterday I deleted all files from hard drive.

Luckily, I cleaned up and saved all files externally before I got the final circle of death symbol.

Pinkytoe, that is really interesting, and I have been thinking about doing something similar, limiting computer to certain hours in day, but I work on it, so it's hard.

I agree that it would be great to reduce my online hours/computer uses. I do find it is so easy to procrastinate and just sit in front of the screen, especially when I know there are other things to be done.

This is me. I'm a avoidant person. I used to have a much cleaner house, because it was easier to clean and tidy than to do whatever it was I didn't want to do. Huge paper due? Work data to compile? Oh - the windows want washing, the floor is a mess, the curtains need washed. . . but now, with a handy-dandy internet connection, I can avoid like crazy and accomplish nothing at all!! Progress!!

    Oh, wait. . .

I remember being without internet for long periods when moving into a new apartment. Honestly it got kind of dark, I would just stare at the ceiling and listen to ancient CDs. Not really happy memories at all. Of course I was also without a fridge, a stove, and heating, and landline for awhile - it was like a month or two before it was *ALL* resolved. So maybe there was other stuff going on as well . And I didn't have a smart phone which is very different.

But I can see avoiding computers/phones for awhile, like maybe avoid them entirely one or two days a week on the weekend or something, that I could see being positive.

This is so true. Never was house cleaning so attractive as when a paper was due ( when I was in college) or when performance appraisals were due (when I was working,)

That's so me. I made a small quilt while avoiding doing my taxes one year. It looked like a baby quilt, so I named it Tax Deduction. I needed to make a small change to my router last week (provider upgrade) which resulted in a few days off line. I got lots of Kindle books finished. Then, miracle of miracles, my router healed itself. Somewhere in the middle of that, my cell died, so I had to do a hard reboot on that. To say I've had just about enough tech SNAFUs for the time being would be an understatement.
