I used to take about 1/4 cup of the freshly-made yogurt and put it aside as the starter for the next batch. Eventually it does weaken, but it's a bit of a frugal help.

Continuing foraging. Yesterday I tried Japanese knotweed and over the weekend also had lilacs in a salad and violets in a salad. All are edible but none tasty.

I had no idea you could eat knotweed. My son's backyard is a constant siege with it, and I wish I could figure out a way to make it taste good--maybe in a lasagna...

I tried the leaves. The young shoots may be better, are supposed to be similar to rhubarb, but I am not a rhubarb fan.

Have you tried garlic mustard? That seems to be everywhere these days, and it is such a pernicious weed, but it is supposed to be very tasty and I've heard it makes a good pesto.

Couple of years ago I made vanilla extract with the costco brand gluten free corn vodka and recently opened it to do some gluten free baking. People liked the gluten free goodies so I'll keep the batch for GF baking. I also made chai with it and it tasted too much like cream soda for my tastes. I don't have gluten issues so I'll keep using the regular grain vodka for our baking.

The corn vodka batch looked, smelled, and tasted like cream soda. Thinking the vodka didn't extract all the flavor from the vanilla pods. Going to put the pods in grain vodka and see what happens. Probably won't happen until I can get to a liquor store.

Sorry, I had to laugh at this--I heard this so many times growing up.

The New Hampshire doctor will make me go to a new patient visit before I get a physical which insurance will apply to my deductible so rather than pay the $200 or whatever I would be charged I called my old doctor from years ago. They are no longer requiring masks and will take me back without that visit. This will save me the $5 per week I am charged extra on my health insurance since I haven't gone for a physical in two years.
