    Marmite

I saw in the peanut butter thread, IshbelRobertson is a "marmite lover".

Yanks may have a tendency to wonder and/or gossip about a marmite lover. So, to nip any speculation in the bud, here is some Marmite lore...

(And, yes, there are certain Brits who combine Marmite and peanut butter!)

I thought of marmite too. My mom was from New Zealand and liked Vegemite, so that's what I was exposed to, but couldn't develop a taste for it.

Marmite and butter with a chunk of good cheddar on homemade bread is the food of gods. Mising it with peanute butter? Hmmmm.
As Cicero said, “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.”

    Great snack.

Toast one side of a slice of bread, turn over and smear marmite on hot, untoasted side. Top with good, mature cheddar cheese (grated). Stick under the grill and allow to turn golden and bubbly. Poor man's Welsh rarebit was what my mum called it when we were kids and too hungry to wait for the 'real' rarebit to cook!

Edited to add: I use the word 'grill' in the UK-sense, what I think is referred to as 'broil' in US speak!

I like it, but the rest of the family has a rather violent reaction so I only get a taste when one of the lads throws a football party (soccer to the broilers in the room).

I need to try marmite and cheddar. I'm sold.

Vegemite is an essential in most Australian houses and my experience is that 99% of people here love it.

My favourite way to have it is on toast, scrape of vegemite and a chunk of avocado, squished lightly into each other. V. v. complementary tastes! And I agree about vegemite and cheese - it's a standard for school lunch boxes.

BTW, I think some people react against the tast of vegemite/marmite (marmite is sweeter) because they put on too much. They are strong tastes so you don't need too much at a time.

I have to say, I've only had vegemite. Maybe I'd like Marmite better.
