Order from Amazon was "delivered", but I never got it

I was expecting this package from Amazon tomorrow, but when I checked the tracking tonight, it said "delivered". Its no where around and its too late to call the USPS.
Have you ever found the tracking to be incorrect? I'm thinking its wrong, since it didn't say that it left the local P.O., and the only thing it said was "in transit", when it usually says "out for delivery" when its on its way to my house from the local town.
I'll be bummed if they left it down by the mailbox and someone stole it. But I think its probably still in the local Post Office.
Any discrepancies for you with the tracking of a package?

A lot of times that means it's delivered to the carrier's box...he may not have rec'd it till after he finished his route today. See this same comment a lot on Etsy forums.
I'd go ahead and all the post office in the a.m. just to double check.

That happened to us a few months ago. Received it the next day.

This happened to me. We never received it, so Amazon reimbursed me and I had to scramble to buy the item at a store. They did take my word for it though, and I appreciated that!

Double-check who the carrier was that says "delivered". Amazon ships many items with UPS, which then "drop-ships" them to the USPS (your local Post Office). Who then delivers them the "last mile" to your mail receptacle.

You are correct that they should say "out for delivery" - the Post Office scans the shipments when they receive them from UPS, but they don't actually get delivered till the next day, 'cause they were received from UPS after the carriers have left for their routes for the day.

It looks like it was delivered from FedEx Smartpost to the USPS......which then was probably marked as "delivered". What confused me is that Amazon said since it was delivered, there would be no more tracking.
Anyhow.......I'm feeling more hopeful now that it will come tomorrow. (I just always have to have something to worry about!)
    Thanks for everyone's help.

Mystery solved.........I called the P.O. this morning, and sure enough, it was an error. They have my package and I'll get it this afternoon. YAY!

It is normal to see a 'delivered' status for a tracking number when FedEX or UPS uses the USPS for final delivery. Their part stops when it hits their local post office. What I think is odd is this.....I live 15 miles from a UPS depot, a UPS delivery van drives past my house every day to a local business but when a parcel is delivered by UPS ground using USPS for the final delivery it is delivered from the UPS depot across town to the post office; it then travels 70 miles south to that city's USPS distribution center; then 45 miles east to my local USPS distribution center; then 45 miles to my local post office; then 7 miles to my home. The package travels 167 miles out of its way costing way more than if the UPS van that drives past my house would just deliver it. I also called one time and asked if my package could be held at the depot and I'd pick it up but was told they could not find it in the thousands of packages they would have to look through (but they could find it to put on a delivery van?). Where is the sense in all of that??
