Stopped by to see what everyone is up to! I am now semi-retired from nursing. We are getting ready to start up a little homestead, complete with a yurt to live in. I'll read around the site here and try to catch up! I see that bae and alan are here--anybody else I know?

Hey, bae! I'll try to keep everyone posted on the yurt saga--it is currently in Mongolia being finished up. It should arrive toward the end of April or early May. We went traditional, not the vinyl things that are so common here in the States.

I am so impressed--most folks around here have never heard of a yurt, let alone a ger!

Welcome back, Aspen. Glad you stopped by. Seriously jealous about the yurt, even though I constantly complain about my Mongol DH's obsession with throwing the windows open when it is below freezing outside. You can take the Mongol out of Mongolia but you can't take the Mongolian out of the Mongol, I guess!

Hope you stop by more frequently. We've missed you.

I love films about Nepal where yurts figure prominently. Or are they yurts? You can probably educate me.

edited to add: mybe those films were about Mongolia. I get the two mixed up. But yurts are very very cozy looking in these films.

Aspen, did you find homes for the critters that were raising or are they joining you in the yurt homestead? Nice to hear from you.

Wabbits. She was the Wabbit queen.

I am always attracted to rabbits, but have not made that leap yet.

I was on the old site but rarely posted. Just wanted to tell you that my son was touring the world and spent time in Mongolia. They would shear the sheep and drag the fleeces around Behind horses to make the batts for the yurts. If you have any interest about the Mongolian way of life Conn iggulden wrote a great series of books about Mongolia starting with Ghengis and their way of life, nomadic traveling around with yurts is fascinating.

They weigh a lot. How will the yurt get to the states? I am guessing by boat.

Good to hear how you are doing Aspen. Retirement is wonderful!
Also, think the homesteading and yurt are great.

Hi, Aspen! How COOL...an authentic Mongolian yurt to live in! I love their textile patterns...amazing colors, shapes, and composition. Lhamo, your husband is from Mongolia?! Oh, that's so cool! It's been my dream to spend a year in Ulaan Bator (sp?) for decades now, but I only have one email penpal friend there. How in the world did the two of you meet? Have you been to Mongolia to visit his family? What is/was it like?

Hi Selah,

My DH is ethnic Mongol from Inner Mongolia (an autonomous region in China). We met in grad school -- well, actually we met when I was still an undergraduate, but started our relationship in grad school. His family lives in Hohhot, the capital of IM. We visit them several times a year. Unfortunately, it is more or less a big, pretty polluted city just like many in CHina. I still haven't been back to the area his family is from -- further to the Northeast. It is primarily a farming area now, though it was mixed farming/herding when his parents were young. Actually it probably is an open pit mine like much of INner Mongolia -- major coal deposits there and the environment has been totally trashed from mining, industrialized farming, and overgrazing. Sad place, really. I REALLY want to go to Mongolia but we haven't made it yet. DH had a bad experience there during his first and only visit in the early '90s and doesn't seem that eager to go back (major identity issues for Mongols from China, who get discriminated on from both ends).

I've actually spent more extended time in Tibetan areas of China, especially in Sichuan province. Speak a very obscure Tibetan dialect that I learned for my fieldwork in anthropology -- I pretty much sound like a hillbilly. Haven't learned Mongolian yet -- it is really hard! Would like to learn it and have the kids learn a bit. My kids both have Mongolian names, but otherwise don't know much about that aspect of their family history, which makes me a little sad.

lhamo, the part about sounding like a hillbilly is pretty funny. Thanks for the chuckle. ;)

Hi Aspen - I'm still around. Use to be She-Rah on the old boards. Would love to see some photos of your new place and yurt. While I'm a confirmed city dweller (who's currently living in the 'burbs) I still find the "back-to-the-land" thing very interesting - especially if it is very non-traditional like Yurt-living.
