One of my employees a Fitbit, and she said it was really motivating her to be more active and that she thought my DH might like it. We discussed and he was interested, so we got him one. Now he is on fire to reach his activity and calorie burning goals every day. I am astounded at how effective this is proving to be as a motivator for him. He wanted me to get one, so I did, mainly in order to be supportive of him and help support his enthusiasm (although I could stand to increase my fitness level too, I'm just not interested in weight loss).
These seem to be "all the rage," which isn't usually our thing, but so far, I am very impressed with the effect it is having on DH's behavior. Last night, he hadn't burned enough calories, so while I was in the cellar folding clothes after dinner, he went out and walked around the block!
I never heard of it, but I looked it up and it seems like a cross between a pedometer and MyFitnessPal. I really like MyFitnessPal (http://myfitnesspal.com), but I tend to go in and out of actually being diligent with it, so I'm not sure at this point if a Fitbit would sustain my interest over time, so I wouldn't want to pay for one at this point. I also wouldn't need the sleep feature because I sleep pretty well, and I wake up exactly when I need to.
I'd love to hear more about how yours works out for you.

Catherine, I would be glad to post updates in the future as to whether it was a worthwhile investment or just a fad. The idea that it pretty much boils down to calories in and calories burned is not new, but the way this is packaged/presented is pretty appealing. It seems to be really helping it "click" for DH as to the relationship between how much he eats and his activity level relative to his weight loss goals. We made our 10,000 step activity goal this morning after a hike in the woods, and when we logged in afterwards, we had smiling icons saying we were champions and shouting "hooray," lol. DH just loves it!
I would say there is no one-size-fits-all solution to fitness and weight loss, same as with finance, but I think this tool is really going to make a difference for DH! It seems to be turning it into a game and introducing an element of fun to the whole endeavor.

My mom was given hers by my brother. My brother loved his, due to the ease of tracking results (uses it and a calorie app on his phone) and he has got pretty close to his target weight. I don't think it would be of any use to me, due to the operating system I use. (most things only work with Windows or Mac)
I have one and I LOVE IT! I have the Fitbit Flex. It integrates with Myfitnesspal, Mapmyrun, Waterlogged and Sparkpeople. So far I'm down 10 pounds since I started using it with the other software. It is highly motivating and very insightful if you use it to track your sleep patterns.
