We had some nice rain a few weeks ago, but the weeds have gone crazy. I spread out a thick sheet of straw mulch, and the weeds have grown through it. I just finished weeding the front garden. The back orchard is going to be a challenge. I raked up all the leaves in the Fall and put them under the fruit trees as mulch. I've got a couple more bales of straw that I plan to spread out in the back. How about you?
My yard is mulched with shredded redwood and my vegetable beds are mulch with straw. Potted plants have small bark because it looks better than the straw.
We are having a drought in California so I am going to mulch much more heavily that usual, probably 3 to 4 inches of straw in the vegetable beds. That should help.

Mulching is my life. I get free wood chips from the city.

I'm seeing a big difference in my plants when I mulch. The citrus trees are covered with tiny fruit. I've got a couple more bales of straw that I'll spread out tomorrow. Some of it will go into the compost pile. My neighbor let me take a wheelbarrow full of manure from her horses. The straw will balance it out.
I'd like to get some wood chips again, too.
We grow weeds for firewood here.
In the garden, I use my husband. haha He LOVES to weed. Go figure! But after it's all weeded the first time, I usually add straw. But of course, the weeds come through it, and then they're even harder to get at.
I've realized that I try to do too much with my big yard........and have too many areas that need weeded........so I'm going to try to simplify it.
I just have to accept weeds as part of everything. As long as the vegetables can grow, and I can see a few flowers in my back yard, I just have to be happy with that, and let the weeds have their way with me.

I'm finding that as the roots of the fruit trees spread, it helps with the weed problem. I have to keep the area mulched, though. I seem to have better luck with leaves. They don't look nice, so I just use them in the backyard. I try to look at the weeding as a way to stay in shape. I'm definitely sore when I finish. I've got a lot more weeding to do today.
