How many hours do you sleep a night?
I am 6 hours tops and then wide awake:( I don't feel sleepy during the day, but wilt fast in the evening. Ok so bed at 9pm, up at 2:30ish. Like clock work. I don't even have to look at the clock. I have tried staying up late. 2:30 still I am up, then I am tired. How would I break this habit?

About 5-6 hours. I must have some built in alarm clock and wake up between 3:50 and 3:55 and can't fall asleep. Well, I sure do have quite long days.
I tried staying up late, getting absolutely no coffee or tea, drinking a lot of coffee and tea, cold bedroom, warm bedroom, totally dark room, light switched on, no exercise in the afternoon or evening, meditation, breathing exercises, ... and gave up trying to change my sleeping pattern couple of years ago, I am just enjoying the extra quiet time I get and make sure I use it the best I can. If the body insists that this rhythm is what works for it then let it be that way.

I'm a solid 8 hour person. Go to bed at 10, wake naturally at 6. Go to bed at 11, wake naturally at 7. If I only get 6 hours sleep a couple of days in a row, I feel it, and usually fall asleep in front of the TV at 8.

Usually more like 7, 7 1/2. Go to bed at midnight (and this easily slips to 1) wake up 8 or 8:30. I can fight my night owl tendencies a little but bed before 11 is probably not happening. I do feel tired, sometimes during the day, and very often when I get home. Caffeine just makes everything worse (makes me more and more and more tired in the *long* run) so I consume only very minimal amounts.

8+ I really need my sleep.
I trained myself to go to bed/rise earlier than I used to. I set an alarm telling me what time to go to bed. I can pretty much fall asleep anytime, and just wake up 8 hours later, so that worked for me. I made it a little bit earlier each night. It took a few months though - how long have you been trying?

Another thing is to try and stay awake all night, and then the next night go to bed at the time you would like.
One thing I tell myself is that I always (eventually) adjust to daylight savings time, so I should be able to shift my schedule. You can do it!

This is me too - however I don't go to bed until about 11 - 12 pm and wake at 5 - 6 am. I found that if I sleep more, I dream more (I'm a very active dreamer) and thus feel less rested when I wake. Never nap either unless I'm watching TV - then I'm like an old man and just pass out!

4-5 is it for me. Doctor says that's as much as I can expect at this age (67).

Mine are almost identical as ApatheticNoMore. I just have to make myself get in bed at night, (that is my reading time), so that is anywhere between 11 - 12:30, then usually up by 8, 8:30 or sometimes a bit later. I read once that we are either born an "owl" or a "lark", so I accepted long ago that I am on owl. Although an earlier owl than I used to be. When I was younger if I didn't have to get up early the next day for work or something, my routine was staying up till 2 or 3 a.m., but I don't do that any longer.

Is this a new problem, ctg? I know your schedule is crazy right now with stress and driving. When I am very stressed, my sleep goes to hell, like you describe here, and it's up at 2:30, like you say.

for me it is a sign I really need to change things up. For short term relief, I take melatonin before bed. I am also liking Estrovert (I think that' sthe name, it's over the counter for menopause which helps with the hot flashes that would wake me up at night.)
I also take a couple of valerian if I am really upset.

Am starting back with St John's wort, as sleep is problematic lately due to nighttime asthma problems.

But I think first thing if you could stop some of that driving, it would help.

Nope not new, years with some change on and off. Melatonin gave me wild dreams. But looks like every has different sleep clocks.

I usually sleep around 7 hours, but sometimes its 5-6. I am in a position to sleep to noon every day, but I'm usually done sleeping at 5:30-6. Weird.

I go to bed around 9:00 p.m. I wake up around 5:00 or 6:00 a.m. So, 8 or 9 hours. For a while I was waking up in the middle of the night with muscle pain in my legs. I've changed my diet, and the pain has gone away. It really makes a difference when you can sleep well. I hope you find a remedy.

8-9 hours is ideal. I find I need less when I'm not drinking coffee but it's hard to quit for very long.

During the weekdays I'm asleep by 9:30 or 10:30 and awake at 4:45. The alarm is set for 5 but I can't remember the last time I actually heard it. Weekends bed by midnight and up at 6:45 (again 15 min before the alarm is set...).
So a little over 6 a night. Sometimes I'll take a quick nap during the afternoon but that is rare.

Oh for a good night's sleep. It eludes me more often than not. I attribute it to a combination of post-menopausal hot flashes and a hellish work-schedule the last 5 years of my working career.

Because of having to be at work at an early hour my entire working life (36 years or so), my body learned to be an early bird. I still have a hard time staying awake past 9:00 pm, and wake early naturally. Unfortunately, sometimes early is 3:00 am. And more often than not my sleep is interrupted every hour or so with hot flashes, to the point of waking up. Not a good sleep. So I nap most days; some days I can nap well and catch up on my sleep, some days not.

So I don't know WHAT my body actually NEEDS. I think I get about 6 hours per/24-hour cycle of productive sleep. Maybe less.

I am envious of those of you who sleep well. Cherish it.

I used to be horrible at sleeping until I did this: eat protein (usually lentils with quinoia/amaranth now that I hear rice is full of toxic metals) at supper, take 2 Calms Forte's and one 3 mg Melatonin when I turn in. I get 8 hours every time this way, even when the dogs need attention in the middle of the night, I go right back to sleep.

6 if I'm lucky. I have some pain issues so it is a restless 6.

I'm probably about a 7 hr person - although it doesn't matter how much sleep i get, i will often get tired early/mid evening.

the challenge is i need to push thru and stay awake, else it messes up my whole sleep pattern.
A powernap is fine, but nothing longer.

Update. Dentist appointment two weeks ago I am told ( once again ) I am clinching grinding my teeth at night. I have stretched the muscle in my jaw. This is why I don't sleep soundly I am told. I am advised to wear a brace at night. I have tried it a few times, guess I have not given it the best effort, but I have not noticed much difference.

I think the brace just protects your teeth..........it doesn't really help your sleep, I don't think.
I wear a MORA at night (mandibular orthopedic repositioning appliance), and it doesn't really affect my sleep, but it does help my jaw during the day.

Our alarm is set for 7.15am and I am usually in bed sometime between 11 and midnight, so 7-8 hours, unless I wake sooner which is more likely to happen in summer. I'd rather go earlier but my dh is a night owl. However, it seems to be enough sleep for me, now that it is UNBROKEN.

Since having children (23 yrs ago) my sleep was always broken and getting progressively worse (2am waking and unable to fall back asleep) which I attributed to menopause. Then I changed my diet (eliminated grains, oils, processed foods, and drastically reduced sugar; focus mainly on meat, eggs, veges, fruit, cheese) and this problem practically vanished. It's been wonderful having mainly uninterrupted sleep for the past two years so even when it's a late night I always feel more refreshed than a longer night of patchy sleep. I seldom even get up to the bathroom.

Well considering it is 3:22 am and I am reading posts, I guess my sleep is still crummy :(
