View Full Version : another tiny house thread
Saw this on MSN Money this morning: http://t.money.msn.com/real-estate/12-tiny-tricked-out-homes
I love tiny houses and someday will probably end up in a tiny house - or more likely a tiny apt (no yard work!) although the "Ball in the Sky" is pretty cool...er....bizarre :-).

I wish they had a better view of the balls mounting supports. (does it wobble much, what about fraying, etc) Has that RV cabin that was mentioned in two other threads.

Yeah doesn't say anything about how it's strung up but apparently it is for rent in Vancouver, BC.

Love this! Thanks for posting!
This little charmer's for sale in Seattle. If I were ready to move, I could buy it and stash all my stuff in the garage.http://www.komonews.com/seattlerefined/the-home/370-square-foot-Ballard-condo-on-sale--262930801.html

Can't believe they made "condos" back in 1923. Guess it was all tiny houses rather than multiple conjoined housing - much nicer. Price tag is a little too steep for po' ole me but I think that's probably pretty low for Seattle. I've been scouring the small house rental ads (mostly furnished long term vacation rental places but regular rentals too) a lot and there are some super cute dinky places out there. Here's an example of a place I saw in Bremerton, wa http://tinyhouselistings.com/tiny-house-for-rent/ follow arrow at bottom to see more in different areas.

Eureka Springs, Arkansas has some cute small houses, and this is a new property on the market. Cute little house, a separate studio. 3 acres to play in, it would be fun.

Iris Lilies, we have an area of Indiana like that called Brown County (well much of southcentral Indiana). Lots of cabins that look like this one. Many are rentals to try out the whole cabin experience.

Love all the little houses, but these seem like an awful lot to pay for under 500 square feet! I guess the almost 3 acres on the one might make it worth a little more, but... seriously, I will never be able to afford a tiny house at those kinds of prices.

And in my price range too (here in Calif a similar place could go for millions!) ...except too far out in the boonies for this city girl. That's part of the problem with little houses - they all seem to be out in the boonies, on too much land, or in states I wouldn't want to live in (although AK is nice it's got that wild weather - and not in a good way). But it's fun to look and I do see tons of places that I'd be happy renting short term, just wouldn't wan to live there forever.
There's a program called Tiny House Nation premiering on FYI channel on cable Wednesday, July 9 at 10pm.

Achtung: we already HAD that other "tiny house" thread, I gave my opinion, and that is the long-and-short of it! Go read it. Then, stop obsessing over tiny houses. Y'know--I know of people who lived in Alaska, all their lives, okay? When they get to be in that age category you kids are in, some of them think: I'm moving where it's WARM! NO MORE COLD WEATHER! It's analogous to you ladies thinking:" I'm downsizing to the absolute minimum--so I'll have more time to EAT and watch Mooovvees, instead of housecleaning." So, here's what happens--the Alaska people move to Tx or Az or even---yes, Hawaii so they can luau. But, after a couple years, guess what? It's time to move back to AK--it's too HOT here, and the PEOPLE are so _________, here. I'll let you fill in the blank. And their grand experiment with relocating turns into a costly experiment. So, be careful what you wish for. Tiny houses may be a fantasy, but you'll get a "tiny house" that is very cozy on a small lot in the cemetery, soon enough. Hope that helps you some. Thank Me.
Achtung? You ladies...? Obsessing....?

Interesting. Would love to see pics on the inside - just to see.
Packy - if you already gave your opinion, and that is the long-and-short of it - why post again? Obsessing?? LOL

That dumpster was posted about here, MUCH earlier in its existance. Good to have an update.
I like this little beauty a lot. Too small for me, but lovely inside.

Achtung? You ladies...? Obsessing....? I don't have an original thought. I am someone else who is trying to tell you that this "tiny house" fad is just that. If you have a right to keep beating your drums about it, so do I. Those absurdly "Tiny Houses" are just another form-preceding-function fad, by a mile. Some people are very fascinated with stuff that is but a Novelty . There is a F'book site called American Nitro. It is automotive, but shows hillbilly hotrods that have been "re-engineered". The more incongruous the combination, the better. Only ingenuity and um, creativity counts. Example: a 1940's Lincoln V 12 engine, fitted into a custom-made motorcycle. With straight pipes. Retro-engineered. That engine weighs in the neighborhood of 1000 lbs, and was only 130-150hp. Or, the cars with giant-sized weelz and littlebitty tyres, jacked way up. Some people are in Awe, but Thinking People are not. See? So it is with those tiny houses. You kids would soon feel like it was a jail cell. I can see where it fits into your fantasy: You don't like all the housecleaning a normal home requires to maintain it to your standards. You live in one of the high-rent areas on either coast, and it is a nightmare to pay taxes, mortgage, Utility bills, Maintenance, and keep the HOA/ neighborhood association off your back regarding lawn care, etc., etc. I am not without empathy: I can see why, in your fantasy world, a Tiny House would alleviate all of that. But, it would lead to dissatisfaction in meeting your other needs, I am sure . Why not move to the Midwest, and have a home similar to, or exactly like the ones Habitat for Humanity builds, on a small lot? That would prolly cost you waaay less, and keep you happy. Or would it? Hope that helps you some. Thankk Mee.
I wouldn't call it a fad, because the vast majority of people aren't actually doing the tiny house thing, because most people do realize that while in its pure form it could be both incredibly freeing and incredibly personal and incredibly "green", the chances of it being anything but impractical are small. To me, the "point" and allure of a tiny house is not to make the tiniest house possible, it's once again the point of finding out what is enough. Who was it who was looking for a house in the DC area? ;)

Yea they would :).
There are bound to be down sides and tradeoffs in any shelter situation (well except for the shelter I'd get if I won the lottery when I have all the money in the universe) so ...
