View Full Version : Bullmastiffs and other droolers
We lost our beloved 14-yr old dog last October, and we're thinking of getting a new pet. I was at the shelter on Saturday and met the loveliest girl - a 1-yr old Bullmastiff mix, 83 lbs, and soooo sweet. Our only concern was the drooling - she didn't drool a lot, probably because she's a mix, but there was some. We've never had a drooler and we didn't know if we would be okay with it. We went home to think about it, I looked up the breed and saw what a great fit it would be for us, went back to adopt her, and she was gone. :( I was very sad. Since then, I've found another Bully mix up for adoption and I'm really interested, but again I'm worried about the drool. I haven't met the new dog yet. Our dog would live indoors with us, with access to gated front and back yards.
Does anyone here have experiences with dogs who drool? How much did it bother you? Would you do it again?
I've had Newfies, St. Bernards, Basset Hounds, Black/Tan Coonhounds - all drool, you learn to "appreciate" it :-)

Were they indoor dogs?
Were they indoor dogs?
Very much so. There's a 110 pound coon hound sleeping on my feet this very moment.

So sorry you lost the shelter dog, watergoddess. I've never had a drooler, but I love mixed breeds. They usually have nice temperaments and are healthy. Looking forward to hearing about your new dog...

We had a Pyr who drooled. We also have a cat with a cleft palate, who drool more than the Pyr did. You deal with it.
I've decided to volunteer at the shelter to (1) give back, and (2) see if I would learn to appreciate the drool :). I turned in my app today and hopefully I'll start soon. I have time right now, so I think this would be a big help to me, and I'll be able to help the shelter and the dogs too - win/win/win.
130 lb. Boxer/Mastiff mix..indoor..drool and all..just don't be surprised when you look at your 15 foot wall and see drool up there. :)

I've had 20 bulldogs through our house over the years and all of them are messy drinkers. There is ALWAYS water scattered everywhere with these guys.
I guess that some of them drool although I really can only think of one extreme drooler who followed me around in the kitchen with constant drool streams out of both sides of his mouth.
I mean, yeah, they are slobbery as in slobbery kisses and slobbery chewing--the sofa is always wet where they've been chewing a nylabone but maybe that's normal for dogs? I don't know, I always have dogs with wet mouths.
Just start picking up towels from the charity shops. Enough toweling and you will probably not mind so much.
One of my sisters had a drooling champion Basset Hound, and I would automatically grab a couple of her towels when I was there. One to have a clear place for sitting and the other so that I could love on her dog and not feel all stiff when the goo dried.

haha that is sweet.
And yes, I have old towels as part of our decor, but it's more for pee than drool.
That dog was the sweetest boy. His name was Maxwell and it suited him perfectly because he did everything, lived fully and enjoyed his life to the maximum possible. It was a pleasure to see him lope around the yard, ears and undercarriage flowing with each Basset-y leap.

We had a german short haired pointer & they are droolers. Great dogs but I would not want a dog that does that again.
I have great news! Last night, the shelter listed a Boxer puppy that they'd just got. I went before they opened this morning and I was able to be the first person to see her. She is a DOLL. Six months old, 40 lbs, sweet, smart, affectionate, responsive, etc..... She's home with me now, happily working on a chewy near me after we spent time playing in the backyard. She is agile!
She was an owner surrender because her owner got pregnant and couldn't care for her. I really lucked out. I will still volunteer, because I wouldn't have seen her if I hadn't been signing up for my volunteer training. Happy day! :)

That's such good news, watergoddess ! Boxers are so smart and such nice dogs.
Ummmm....picture? Please.
Yes pictures!! Congrats Water Goddess, I think boxwe puppies are adorable and they grow up to be such elegant dogs too.
Thanks everyone. I haven't taken any good pics of her yet - she moves around too much! But she looks a lot like this puppy here - very similar coloring & markings, goofiness, adorableness - except my girl is a bit taller and maybe a couple of months older. I've included the link to this photographer because she has some great pics of other dogs as well.
