View Full Version : Farm is sold!

Earlier I had mentioned that I was ready to sell my farm and look at something requiring less effort. When DH and I shared the load, it was fun and manageable. With him gone, it became too much.

A dear friend had told me years ago that he had observed that people go through stages in housing as they aged.
1. Must plan for the future, 2. not ready to move yet and 3. it is too much effort to move now. I decided that I must plan for the future and enact to reduce the burden on my family. It is my choice where to go, when and what to choose on my terms and timetable.

The property was listed exclusively before it was ready to show and the second family through placed a really good conditional offer and removed the conditions today 10 days after listing. I get to stay as long as I need until spring 2015 rent-free. I hope to be out by December this year though. Amazing when the stars align on one's behalf.
Had to share.

So happy for you. I'm hoping to close today or tomorrow on our old 5 acre family farm. So many good memories but just can't keep it with where life has lead us this past year.

razz, good for you for getting this done. It's a relief and exciting at the same time to move when you know the time is right.

That is wonderful news, and it seems like the conditions for you are as favorable as can be. Good show!

I am so proud of you for doing what seems needed done, BEFORE it had to be done. Congratulations razz.

(we are already at the "too much effort to move now" stage.)

There is new small development by a good builder with 8 compact semi freehold single floor townhouses with full basement in the works in a local walkable village. I have placed my name to get one of these. I can now wait until they are built which is the real joy. My kids love the area of choice as well which is a real bonus. I also have a number of friends living in the village already.

Razz, it all sounds terrific! I love your choice to do things on your own terms, on your own timetable, while also keeping in mind the impact your choices make on your family members.

I have just deleted a long rant about a family member who has not, to put it mildly, taken such similar steps towards her future. Nor has she considered the impact her choices have made on her one adult daughter who is her only living immediate relative (not me--I am related to this lady by the convolutions of multiple marriages within my family). Just know, your kindness towards yourself and your family will bring great karmic merit! :)

My in-laws are in your third category and are now going down quickly. They refused to even considering moving when it was still possible. I am learning from people like you (and them) that being responsible for our own lives is the greatest consideration to others. Congratulations!

That is great! Amazing contract as well to be able to stay as long as you need. Its such a buyers market around here that buyers are making all sorts of crazy demands along with low offers. A friend recently listed their house and had an offer 1 day later from people from NJ demanding the brand new French door fridge and closing within10 days.

Eeek! We are between 1 & 2 now. I sure hope we get our act together before we get to 3!

My parents felt this way, too. They were both secretly wishing they could move to Carmel and live in a two bedroom bungalow. They each came to me separately and told me the same thing. I went with my mom to look at a couple of small homes. They ended up staying in their large 5 bedroom, 3 bathroom house. They have a lot of stuff. The stairs are difficult for my mom. She felt it was too much work to move and kept shopping.
I'm decluttering today, just to keep up on it. I was at my vocal coach's house the other day. She's accumulated a lot of possessions over the years. It made me see that I want to keep my space open and clear.
My current cottage will work for retirement. It's a good feeling to have something small and affordable. It's easier to clean and repair, too. My dad is getting tired of the expensive repairs on his large home.

Having money makes everything easier.

If we stay in this house, which we probably will for many years, I am sort of assuming I'll die before DH so I don't have to worry about moving.

But should DH die first--I know I would soon move to a smaller, simpler place even though our current house is only 2,000 sq ft, it's not huge. And having money, I'd rent or buy the new place first, move the few things that I want into it, then hire someone to get rid of the old place with all of the stuff. That is really not a big deal and I have a hard time understanding how people with means can't make it happen. Those without means, yes, it's more complicated.
