View Full Version : IrisLily or anyone else...
Can you identify this? It's in the neighbor's yard, but he's never home to ask. It seems like it popped up overnight! I love the little dingle-balls on top!

Here's a different angle.sorry they're not larger. (Cell phone pic)

Sorry Kay - I think I could perhaps ID with a closer look, and maybe a shot of some leaves. The flower buds remind me of a Phaelenopsis orchid. How tall is it?
I've found an iPhone app named "Leafsnap" super helpful for this sort of thing, being mostly plant-illiterate myself.
I thought it was a foxglove at first too, but I don't think it is. The flowers are too open. Yeah....it sort of looks like an orchid of some type.
it's not an iris or lily so I don't grow it.
Keep in mind hat it could be something tropical that the neighbor planted after winter. Have you seen it year after year? Agree that the flower look orchid shaped, those big orchids. Are those green round things on top of this flower?
I've seen those before, I think; but I have no clue what they are.
Another acquaintance of mine says it looks like an orchid to her, too. It's probably at least 3 feet tall, maybe more. I could try and get a closer pic, but I'd be trespassing
The little balls on top ARE part of the plant. It's definitely not a foxglove.
Cattleya orchids? But I can't find pics of any of them with those neon green balls. Are you sure they are part of that plant?
You could just ask the homeowner..........
Or......Phalaenopsis orchid?

(The only image I could find that had those balls).
I hope it's okay, but I'm asking on a tropical plant forum. I'll let you know what they say.

If he was ever home, I would...
LOL KayLR............I asked someone on an orchid forum and he said the pic was really too small to tell, but his guess was that it was a phalaenopsis orchid......but maybe fake.
I was also wondering about about it being real.........those green balls just don't look natural.

ah yes, the faux or augmented plant trick.
We do that now and then. We spray paint our alliums and it causes a big scene. People always stop their cars and ask us what those plants are, haha.
OP I can't believe that your neighbor would be bothered by you going up to his plant in his front yard and looking closely at it. Are people that weird where you are?--Said she, who has No Trespassing signs on her iris n' lily garden. :) But those signs are not my idea, DH won't take them down.
I think most gardeners would be flattered if you were taking pictures of their plants or garden. As long as you don't go cutting a bouquet without permission, I cannot imagine anyone taking offense.

If he was ever home, I would...
Drop a note at his door.
And be ready for him to say it's a silk flower. haha
Reminds me of the time I was in Penney's. I was in line to buy something and the woman in front of me was holding a small baby. I smiled at her and the baby.........you know.......the kind of loving smile one mother gives to another with a child. Well, it was a doll. Dang did I feel STUPID!! hahahaha
Ok I snuck up in the yard with a camera this time...I agree, it does almost look fake, but there are discolorations on the dingle balls. If you click on this it will enlarge.1421
I do think it's fake............so now you really have to ask him! Well, not really.........if it still looks that good in a couple weeks, you'll know it's fake.
Just seems weird for them to put something fake in their yard because they're so fastidious about it. The rest of the landscape really speaks for itself. It may be my eyes playing tricks on me, but it seems like it's changed some over the week or so I've been looking at it.
Hmmmm.......well maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they grew something special (tropical) this year and it turned out great!
All the pics I've seen online for that type of orchid seems like they grow it indoors and id doesn't get much more than 12-18" tall.
We'll just have to wait and see. :)

Whatever it is, it is beautiful!!!!
It definitely looks lie a Phalaenopsis orchid to me. A lot of people put out their houseplants in the summer, so that's probably the story here. I agree that it's very beautiful.

It looks fake to me. But then, I've been known to go up to a Phalaenopsis orchid to feel it for realness.
Faux white ones pass as the real thing, but this bright pink thing really looks faux and I swear that I can even see a thread of the fabric.
I now think it's fake too...and can't wait to see the neighbor to confront him about it! ;)
Hey Kay...............is that flower still looking as good as on day 1? Inquiring minds want to know! :)
Why, yes it is!! And by some miracle, it has moved to a different flower bed in their yard! (shaking head---I just don't get why they have this---their yard is otherwise lovely.)
LOL! Maybe it attracts certain butterflies more than the other flowers.....but when they get there and realize it's fake, then they go to the other flowers? I'm probably giving the guy too much credit. hahaha
Well.....the real flower that the fake one is pretending to be, is still a very pretty flower. :)
Maybe your neighbors won the "fake" orchid at some event and don't know what to do with it. Lol.
Linda
Or it was given to them by a friend, who always drives past their yard. haha
