This is gross. I bought a big package and a small package of hamburger at Kroger yesterday. This morning, the small package was almost white.
I've googled it, and it sounds like its from a lack of O2 and will pink up when exposed to air. But dang, it's disgusting looking! Then I read they put coloring in hamburger to keep it red. That would have to be labeled as such, right? I've just never seen hamburger look soooooo ashen. I'm returning it.
Blech!

Due to all the potential for bacteria and other issues with ground beef, I have switched to other forms of protein. When they grind up hundreds of animal parts to make ground beef, there is just too many opportunities for problems. I would be looking for a butcher and buying a hind quarter of one cow to ensure quality.

I just noticed the other day while shopping at Kroger that the fresh salmon is labeled "color added". I never knew that before! I wonder why the color is added - just to make it look more appealing I suppose. Can we not handle real food?

Yes Sad Eyed Lady.......they add it so it looks like the fish were eating shrimp in the wild (which is the color of wild-caught salmon looks like). :(
The stuff that has color added is the farm-raised salmon.

I try not to eat farm raised fish. Lots of reasons but they are just subject to stress and the possibility of additional additives and antibiotics from large scale cramped growing conditions.
