View Full Version : What do YOU use marjoram for?
I received a free plant, and it's doing really well. But I've never used it before. Ideas?
Italian food. Vegetables. In a mix with thyme and maybe parsley as general seasoning (for anything, really). A fresh marjoram plant reminds me of the 70s Herbal Essence Shampoo for its smell , but it doesn't /taste/ at all like shampoo. :)

I used to make a vegetarian Spanish rice dish that had sauteed carrots seasoned with marjoram. I loved it. I use it in salad dressing, too. It's a lot like oregano...

Yea it's a lot like oregano but much less pungent. I mean fresh oregano can be powerful (though that too depends on the variety - one variety of oregano is actually a crossbreed oregano/marjoram - and it's more mild - but those that aren't - strong!). So I'd see more oregano being what you'd want to use in cooking (in a spaghetti sauce say because you want the strength of flavor to go into the sauce, and marjoram as more "safe" to use raw :) ). What I use them for, not much, despite doing Mediterranian cooking sometimes, it's not as herb heavy as you'd think. I put oregano in marinated mushrooms. And with roasted potatoes - roasted with olive oil, salt pepper, black olives if you've got them, and oregano/marjoram.
Sadly marjaroms have mostly lived up to their reputation as an annual and not been perenials like oregano, although I think they could be perennials if the conditions were just right. But they usually die on me after a year or so.

I used to make a mean beef pot roast that heavily involved marjoram. Need to dig out that recipe again - thanks for the reminder Kay!
