My FB page used to be in my control--no more. I want to close it and open a new one or else unfriend some people and if possible some of the organizations that have landed there without my consent. It's gotten hard to find the posts from my real, intended FB friends amid all the junk that's on there now, including people FB has put on there as friends--people I really haven't liked for years but apparently are there because we know people in common so FB decided that was good enough. This pisses me off every day. I hope someone here knows a way to handle this stuff.

I'm not a techie, but you can block or deactivate or unfriend almost anyone or any organization. I know FB tends to infiltrate our lives, but I'm pretty sure you can get rid of news feeds by people you don't like, and you can unfriend/block people you don't like, and set your privacy settings to your liking so that only the people you want can see the things you post.

If you're really tired of the whole FB thing, deactivate your account for a short time or a long time.

Reader99 posted a great tip about using the little arrow at the top right of a share to block future shares from that site without blocking the person. This is great for situations where you would like to see a friend's personal updates, but don't want to see what they're sharing from their favorite rabid, extremist social/political/religious sites, or even sites that just add a bunch of insipid crap that clutters up your newsfeed.

I followed ApatheticNoMore's instructions a few months ago and have been very happy to deactivate. Heard on news last week of FB's social experiment-- sold my stock a long time ago, think it violates privacy and commercializes friendship and family ties. A general boycott of FB seems in order...
