Great blue heron. I think.

Oh neat! Do you have gophers in your yard? The herons around here hunt them like crazy.
That looks really pale - I wonder if it's a young one or something?
No gophers, but lots of moles, mice, etc. I thought they only ate fish?
Yes, I agree......it looks pale and thin. I'm thinking it's a young one. We have a large creek on our property, so maybe it had been hanging out there. I hope it leaves the frogs and tadpoles and snakes alone in my backyard watergardens! It's always hard to know who to root for!
We have a blue heron behind our house in the creek and now and then it must sense my dog and I walking along side and it emerges with this immense wingspan--what a sight!
They are really aware of movement around then. It's hard to ever get close to them. About 14 miles from here, they destroyed a heron rookery to build a subdivision. :(
I see one fly over our house maybe a couple times a month. And I do here them taking off from our creek. They have a very guttural squawk. Such beautiful birds! One summer we had a green heron hang around. That was fun.
We had one living in our neighborhood pond last year that looked like that - only he had only one leg. Always solo. I always wonder what happened to him.

Beautiful...So nice that you have a lot if land where can see these beautiful animals....
DH and I were talking the other day that they seem to be loners. Over the years, I think I've only seen them fly over once, when there were 2 of them. Mostly always alone.
Tussiemussies........I am thankful every day that we have this land!
What a beautiful way to start the day!!

So nice that you live where you can enjoy the hidden wildlife that does not dwell in house developments!
