View Full Version : My VISA may have been used again...........
This morning I saw a strange charge on my VISA. It was for yesterday and was for "DONGJU". Fortunately it was just a little over $20.00 and I'll get it back if I contest it.
I'm trying to figure this out before I have to block my VISA, yet again, and get a new one....which will take 7-10 days. The charge appears to be from Korea (according to my credit union)..
I ordered a cell phone case online yesterday from a company I had never used before. (casesatdiscount.co.....) It appeared to be legitimate. What's strange, though, is that when they sent me a receipt, right after ordering it yesterday (July 31), the date they used was August 1. I looked up Korea's time zone and it's a day ahead of us.
I also realize that this company uses "SSLPayGate" for billing. I looked them up and they have an AWFUL record.
The charge on my VISA is about $1.50 more than what I was charged for the cell phone case.
What's also weird is that I emailed them, and they didn't answer. I've called their number all day and it's either busy, had weird noise, or doesn't even ring at all.
Maybe I've been had.
I thought my credit union would be able to tell me exactly who "DONGJU" is.....but she couldn't.
I'm going to wait a couple more days and see if anything enlightens me. I sure don't want to have to get yet another new VISA number.

I had an on line purchase fraud problem with one of my debit cards. I had to cancel the accounts and fill out an affadavit at the credit union. She told me that once they have the number, they will use it again. Now I only keep the exact amount of purchase in my on line debit account. The person who used mine made a charge to Walmart.com in another state.
I keekp a low credit limit charge card to use in 'risky' situations, strange cities/countries or online places I've not used before just for this reason. It isn't my only card, so replacing it is not a big deal, and I use it so seldom that I know what is legitimate and what isn't. I"ve never had an issue, but that is the idea anyway.
Okay. Mystery solved. I finally got an email this morning explaining that yes, it was a charge from Korea. The cell phone case company is a company in Korea, with U.S. warehouses. The amount differed because they roughly translate the cost.....which, if it's wrong, will be adjusted when it ships from the U.S. I'm sure glad I didn't change my VISA. Seems like they should have a better description of the company on one's VISA statement, so people don't go through all this. I suppose it's just globalization. I suppose I shouldn't even be using a cell phone. :(
I buy most of my items in a real store or order from known well-established like Costco, Amazon etc., suppliers for just this reason. I find enough choice this way for my needs but everyone is different.

I usually do that......but this was so much cheaper. If it all works out, it will be worth it......but if it doesn't, I'll keep going to well-established places.
Last night I received an email from my bank about a fraudulent charge. I called them instead (the email could be a scam) and indeed a charge was declined in KMart in CA for $43. Another one was declined in the same town for $25 at a dentist. The woman told me they had the correct expiration date but the wrong 3-digit number on the back. Scary! I rarely use my card when I shop in person and only use it at big legitimate online vendors. So tonight I changed a bunch of passwords that even I won't remember and now I'm waiting for my replacement card.
At least now I'm using a credit card instead of a debit card, which is all I had for quite a while.
That's a bummer. Seems like it must happen all the time everywhere. I wonder why we don't do our credit cards the way some other countries do? I think they put a micro chip in them. We're just lucky we don't have to pay the fraudulent charges.
I did receive my iphone case, but how they are handling the VISA payment leaves much to be desired. They finally charged my VISA the final amount, but it was off by about $1.50. (too much).
I emailed the U.S. portion of the company and told them to credit my VISA, but they wrote and asked if they could send it as a money order. And through this entire time, the emails I got were from about 4 different companies. I won't be doing this again.
What a hassle. Hope you get your money order. It's not the amount but the principle of the thing.
Now that they have those tiny card scanners for smartphones, how easy is it for anyone to swipe your card? It could happen without the cardowner knowing it.
Sometimes with foreign purchases the amounts can change day to day based on the exchange rate. Will be interesting to see if you ever get the money order.
Yes, Float On........that's been going on. When the amount first showed up on my VISA statement, someone from the company emailed me and explained why it was a different number...........because of the exchange rates. But he assured me when it was finally shipped, that number would change to be correct......but unfortunately, they still have it wrong, with yet another amount. Like you said pony mom......it's a big hassle, but it's the principle of the thing. You can't be charging everyone a buck or 2 more, without asking them when you purchase something. Well, I've learned my lesson. At least I have the stuff I ordered, and it is still a good deal even if I don't get the $1.67 back.
I have the feeling I will, because the person who is on the U.S. side of things seems to be keeping in touch with me. We'll see.
