View Full Version : August 100 items

August is a great month to declutter so I thought I'd start another one of the 100 items challenges. I cleaned out two kitchen cabinets this afternoon and even though I swear I don't have plastic storage containers I found 4 to put in the box. I think my husband brings them home from work because I only keep glass containers. 3 waterbottles that none of us like (too difficult to squeeze the water out of) and 2 pots that my mom brought to me recently because they match my copper bottom revere pots but these don't have lids (and I have a hang up about each pot must have it's own lid that fits). The revere I added to the flea market booth today along with some glass salad bowls (also something my mom added to my kitchen).

So I'm at 11 for today.

I'll get my flea market July statement on the 10th so I'll be able to report on how my July sales were. I've also started going through my summer clothes. I figure by this point in the summer, if I haven't worn it.....I won't. I'm actually getting anxious to go through my fall and winter things. I've lost weight this summer and I think I'll end up with a lot to donate or consign.

I'm in for this month, too. I just changed jobs so I have a lot of teaching files I definitely don't need, and we are having Circulation Day at church on the 16th- extra motivation to do a run-through of the whole place.

I'm going to join you as well : I am battling moths and have already thrown away about 20 or so items (moth eaten shoes, cat toys and pieces of fabric). I have also gotten rid of some magazines (they don't eat paper but they seem to lay their eggs on the edges:(

As decluttering coaches, these creatures have been doing a great job so far!

For any item I own, I now think "is this worth the upkeep, the constant cleaning, dusting and attention it requires?"? Moreover, while conducting the giant spring cleaning/decluttering operation, I have found some lovely treasures I'd forgotten about, buried under the junk... I have to find out how much "stuff" I can deal with... I had definitely gone overboard, owning too much and not taking care of what I had.

I'm in. Even though I've been decluttering since mid June I'm not out of the woods yet, should be simple to find another 100 items this month.

Thanks for joining in ladies. I always enjoy our 100 item challenges. I think I did 8 months last year, it amazes me how much we continue to find. I remember moving into this house in January of '93. We only made 3 trips with 2 small trucks and 1 car from the little house we had rented for 2 years.

I will not likely make it to 100 but I will try. I want to pare down my flip flops. I don't have millions but just enough crappy pairs that I don't like wearing. They are dirty, too, so not sure if they are even suitable for giving away. :(

Today a woman came and bought 3 outfits from me, so total of 3 for the month. :)

I also have a goal to get my cloth diapers listed for sale. They are all in a mess in the baby's room and I need to make some money back - I overbought cloth dipes. :)

I did some weeding out of papers a few weeks back, but I need to pull all my cold weather items out and see what purchases I might need to make and what items are too worn out for another winter.

Aroha
8-5-14, 5:37am
Sewing drawer items: length of pink lace, shoelaces, mending kit, packet of goggly eyes, incomplete cross stitch, buttons and beads, pin cushion, tin of picture hooks, laundry pencil and roll of name tags.

Let's call that 10, I threw away some other rubbish too.

Okay, I'm in for 100 as well -- I need a good decluttering challenge!

3 - pairs of very worn-out summer sandals into the trash
1 - pair decent shoes- I've worn twice and they're just not comfortable- Donate box
1- lid I've never used in the 6 years I've had it, but it falls out of the cupboard Every Time I take a pot out! also into the Donate box
5- inches of professional/personnel records, organized and consolidated into one file (yes, I need to keep them, as evidenced by this recent job change and needing to find things that were in there)

Subtotal: 10

Marion

Yesterday, I donated some stuff that seems to attract moths (after cleaning them, of course) : 3 bed covers and a woven box from Kenya.
I threw away small coloured candles (their wax kept 'exploding' and staining whatever they were sitting on') and the tray I used for them = 10 items.

Float On
8-6-14, 1:40pm
I counted the items of clothing that I've been putting in a big box when I discover that an item is "woo hoo, it's too big!!" There are crop pants, skirts, and lots of shirts. 40 items in all. I had taken my 2nd son out to play tennis the other day and spent more time trying to hold my tennis skort up so that went in the box as well.

I'm up to 51. Now I need to find some items that are not clothes to add to my list.

I would like to play!! I don't know if I'll reach 100 but will try.

Mary B.
8-8-14, 9:43am
I'm definitely reaching 100 this month -- in fact I think I'm there already though I haven't been keeping count. A local organization has a garage sale Saturday, and they got a big box of baking pans (I kept enough for everything I actually still bake), three small appliances (steamer, yogurt maker and toaster, since we steam things in a pot, have become vegan and never actually make toast), and a bunch of vases. Likely a total of 30 items.

I've got a bag of clothes ready to go to the thrift store -- say a dozen more things -- and more will be added later today. I've switched from wearing pants to wearing skirts (with tights in the winter) which I find a lot more comfortable. Hence the large personal collection of black pants for work needs to go... Particularly since I work at home 90% of the time.

We're considering a major home reno (floors) which will entail packing everything up, so I'm highly motivated to have "everything" be much less. So -- call it 60 so far this month, with more to come.

welcome Kathryn, so glad to have you join us on the boards and this thread.

Super job Mary B.!

happystuff - it is motivating to read this thread.....I think I'll go through the buffet and see what I can add to the list.

A mop to the garbage, sold two fishing rods, sold a desktop organizer, gave away some baby formula, gave away some dresser knobs, sold some origami paper. Probably won't keep count, but will keep checking in. I want to see if we can get this place whipped into better shape by the time school starts. I don't have high hopes.

Aroha
8-9-14, 12:20am
Stationery drawer items: Hole punch, two rulers, calligraphy pen, Christmas newsletters from assorted friends, clear folder, three halogen bulbs (my halogen lamp broke and was decluttered months ago), expired electronic key, a notebook, origami paper and posted a letter that needed to go years ago.

Call that another 10.

mschrisgo2
8-9-14, 1:05am
Got rid of an entire file box of new paper- spiral notebooks, composition books, graph paper, drawing paper. About half of it went to my grandsons for school, and the other half into the pile for Circulation Day at church next week.

Went through 2 drawers of writing implements, again, some to grandsons, and rest to the church sale.

Went through kitchen cupboards, several misc pieces to box for church sale.

I'm calling this total 30, plus 10 from earlier, equals 40 so far this month.

Aroha
8-9-14, 3:31am
Ten more, bringing total to 30: A breadmaker, four plastic drink bottles, two toddler cups, and some other plastics.

Aroha
8-10-14, 1:06am
My turn again. Birdcage, roller blades, hockey sticks (x3), tennis and other balls, frisbees, water play toys, gumboots, boogie board, mouldy lifejackets, assorted cardboard boxes and plastic bags for recycling. There were multiple items in some of these categories but I'll call it 10 for a total of 40 to date. I'm allowed to go past 100, right?

8-10-14, 9:01am
You bet you can Aroha! You are doing a great job of getting your house in order. I have to ask, has your husband said "Be careful, I'm afraid you are going to declutter me!", yet?

Yesterday all I decluttered was some dust but that was a tough job in itself. Today is empty out the fridge of leftovers and do some grocery shopping. I plan to declutter under the kitchen sink and spend a little time in the laundry room. Hopefully I'll come back with a little list later.

Marion

I decluttered a dozen pair of pantyhose, three pocket calculators and am now working on underwear & scarves.

I have to ask, has your husband said "Be careful, I'm afraid you are going to declutter me!", yet?

'Fraid so.

I would never get rid of him but I'd love to biff all his stuff. Still, while there's still plenty of my own I will hold my peace. Having said that, I wonder if he would miss his hockey stick? We've been married 28 years and dated before that, and he hasn't played hockey in the time I've known him.

I snuck into a few cupboards before breakfast and easily found another 10 items to pop in a bag and drop at the op shop on my way out: Thermos, crystal dish, egg rings, suction cup holders, two decks of cards and a couple of books, and a hippie top that I used to love (10 years ago). And I threw some burnt and greasy pot holders in the bin.

Half way there already and it's only the 11th.

Okay, I'm finally getting started. Better late than never, right?

2 fancy hot chocolate tins to the recycling bin (empty, of course!)

I think you get bonus points for that one! It's been on my monthly list for almost 2 years now to go through old business file boxes in the attic. I can get rid of 10 years worth I'm sure....but the fear of seeing silverfish or scorpions when I pull out those file boxes kind of gives me the willies.

Broke an ice cream scoop: to the garbage.
Charity pickup of a dozen items or so.
Sold several diapers and a woman is on her way to pick up more.
Organized some things for work to take to my new desk.

Starting to dream about rearranging the nursery and the sunroom downstairs. Going to take steps toward it this week. It involves deluttering; wish me luck!!

Filled an entire rubbish bag with unidentifiable garage clutter. I'll call that 1.

Fished a few items out of my picnic set.
Frypan with cord missing.
Plastic cutlery
Dish brush
Tongs
11 bbq forks
2 tennis balls.
A bikometer (or whatever you call a pedometer for a bicycle).
One of those hangers to hold toys to entertain children in the back seat of the car. 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10!

I have a few more items in my sights but still figuring how to get the out of the house.

Tally update: 60.

I'm doing ok..........2 skeins of old yarn
2 wallets
1 purse
5 books
10 old coins and bills
1 blanket
1 old bra

The purse, wallets and old coins/bills I put in a drawer that I have for gift giving. I'll probably give them to my kids for Christmas.

8-12-14, 8:50am
I think I was last on 51.

I've got a stack of 20 movies the boys pulled from their shelves and I'll add those to the antique/flea market booth. 2 pair of shoes (felt guilty for buying a new pair after the "average woman and her shoes" post recently. Added 3 more shirts to the consignment pile.

So I'm at 76.

I finally picked up my july statement and had sold 25 items and made $220 (so $170 after payment for August was pulled). Not bad for getting rid of stuff.

Marion
8-12-14, 10:16am
I had to throw away at least 30 or 40 items, most of which were cat toys colonized by moths :(
One of them was a fluffy bird that went "tweet tweet" as I was bringing the bin bags to the chute. I hope the garbage collectors don't think there's a live animal in the rubbish :0)!

After a few months or a year of doing the 100 item declutter you really start to think more about what you are bringing into the home. I know I've stood in the housewears dept of a store and put something back on the shelf that I've considered trying because all the kitchen gadgets that I've decluttered come to mind.

DW and I have been getting rid of stuff since January. Our friends find it hard to believe as we live rather simply, but it is amazing how it can add up. Our goal is 1,000 by December, and believe we have only 70-80 left to go. And truly, we didn't start with much:-)

Edited to add: this will be a net 1,000 reduction. If we bring anything in it counts against us:-)

I must have decluttered more than 200 items this month... Today, I got rid of empty flower pots which were pn my balcony (about a dozen) and cleaned it with my steam cleaner (Enough pigeon droppings to last me a lifetime).
the days before I got rid of most cat toys (the moths had gotten into them), summer clothes (about 30 items) and shoes (a dozen), lots of unindentified items (soare parts from IKEA furniture, bits and bobs), dozens of real estate mags (I love real estate porn;), dozens of books, audio tapes, VHS, rice cooker, etc. etc.

I didn't want to deal with a yard sale, but Dh really wanted to . He didn't sell much, but he and my dd are having another sale tomorrow. Whatever is leftover is going straight to charity!

For some reason I find it kind of painful to sell my stuff - I just want it gone.

Anyhow, that will be at least 500 things out of the house!

Today I took another load of stuff to the thrift shop. I had brought home a load of things from my parents. Some of it I can put in my antique booth but a lot of it after sorting was only good enough for the thrift shop. So maybe a bonus 35 items for me. I am so thankful that me getting a antique booth was the push my mom needed to start sorting the house. Its so nice to see her getting rid of things.

More left the booth and I added quite a bit to it including 2 old windows from the farm house, a porch fountain, garden iron stakes, garden iron sculpture, 2 hanging baskets, and another 20 items from my mom's clean out. Was nice to hear the manager of the antique store say that he has a customer that asks him to give him a call every time I bring stuff in for my booth.

Now it's September 1 so I didn't quite make it 100 in August despite my roaring start. Over the weekend delivered one large box of books to daughter, which took me to 95.

But I really want to make the century, so today -

small bag of clothing
package of hoarded hotel shampoos
dress up costume
baby clothes
and.....
bouncinette cover

100 items. DONE.

Posting the finishing up of August, from last week...

32 - donated my collection of children's alphabet books to a local private primary school; the collection will be a featured auction item in their annual fundraiser- SO happy to have found a really appropriate "new home"for those books! :)
7 - books to the professional library at my school
4 - collar, leash, 2 dishes to my neighbor for her new dog

Plus 59 earlier in the month, Grand Total for the month- 102

Don't really understand how I can continue to find 100 things to give away since I'm really not bringing anything in, but obviously I still have too many things that really are extraneous. I love doing this 100 items a month! Thanks to all for the company on this journey.
