View Full Version : Loose dogs caused problems............
Yesterday I was working out in the field, and suddenly there was a big dog behind me. Scared me.......but it was friendly. A bit too friendly and just about knocked me over. I could see by the tag on it's collar it was the neighbor's (lives back through the woods.........drives his motocross cycle through the woods, and we complained, so we're not real friendly). Anyhow, the dog went away.
Tonight I was fixing dinner and saw that dog and another one (even bigger) right outside (probably at least 100# or more). I went out to shoo them away and they barreled towards me. The red one was pushing hard on me and rolling around on the ground around me. I yelled at them, but it only made them more energized. I went inside and my old dog saw them and went bonkers. They saw my dog and started lunging at her at the window. I tried to call the owner, but it said his voice mail was full. When DH got home, they tried to push their way through the door when he came in. It was all very crazy and upsetting. I was pissed. I called 911. Of course they were gone by the time the deputy got here. He was going to talk to the owner. He said that if it happens again, I should take a picture with something of ours in the background, to prove they were here. I didn't even think of that. I had my hands so full just trying to control my own dog.
This was very upsetting. I can't imagine being mauled by dogs! They were so out of control and big. I just couldn't believe they were trying to get into the house. DH had one of the dog's head pinned between his leg and the door frame to keep it from rushing in.
It REALLY ticks me off when people out here in the country think this is okay to do.

I'm sorry to hear this. These dogs will be dead dogs soon if they continue to act like this elsewhere, and it's not their fault, they are acting like dogs.
You dog and chickens are endangered by them.
A roaming dog is a liability to the owner, traffic, wildlife, walkers etc. Sorry that this happened to you Quite often the dogs roam when the owners are away but are waiting for them when they return and they blindly believe that their dog/s remained at home all the time.

Yeah, taking a picture would work. (Make sure he gets a copy.) I have a difficult neighbor situation, too. I took a photo a few weeks ago, and it solved the problem.
We sometimes have loose dogs in our area, too. One time two dogs started circling me when I was walking my dog. One of the dogs went for my dog's hind quarters and she yelped. Fortunately a neighbor intervened and she got the dogs back in their yard. She really yelled at them. It was awful. I was so lucky she was there. I was terrified, and I'm a total dog person. The owner was a complete jerk about it, so I called Animal Control. You can fill out a form on line. Now the owners have an electric fence and they keep their gate closed. Another neighbor said they jumped the fence to go after her German shepherd, but jumped back into their own yard because they were afraid. (She said her dog would have killed them.)
Hope you get this resolved. Some people are very lax about their dogs. We had a little boy mauled by a pit bull around the corner. A woman saw the incident, ran out of her house, and hit the dog with a shovel. The police came and shot the dog. These kinds of situations are very dangerous.
We also had two loose shepherds that were going after a friend's car, jumping at the outside of it. The police came and so did Animal Control. The dogs went after both of them! Unreal. Some people do not train or socialize their dogs. They can't control them...
We have a situation south of us where a hybrid wolf dog escaped and is killing animals. They've told people to be on the look out for it that it is dangerous.
It's very sad that the dogs suffer for things that are the owner's fault.
Last year, 2 dogs (not the same 2 as this time) were after a rabbit under our shed and ripped the hell out of the bottom of the shed.
Fortunately, my chickens are in a safe run and coop. But dogs can still scare them so much that they quit laying eggs for awhile. Plus, the chickens can have heart attacks. :(
It really makes me sick thinking what could have happened to my little dog. She acts so vicious.........but I'm sure these 2 dogs could have eaten her for a little snack.
I've never had such aggressive dogs in the yard. I've always been able to go out and scare dogs away.......but not this time.
Float On.......that's scary! I hope all your animals will be okay.
CathyA, I think it's too far south in AR for me to be concerned about. When we first moved into our house the neighbor across the road had 2 pitbulls that cornered me several times. If they weren't bothering people they were fighting each other. I was so glad when they both died off. I actually like that neighbor now but sure didn't back then.
Around here, loose dogs that are harassing people or livestock are shot.
We have a constant influx of visitors who think it is fine to let sweet little Fluffy roam the rural landscapes killing our lambs and chickens, and chasing deer into the road. Even though we have warning signs posted that mention the law, and the probable outcome...
Bad owners, bad!

My dog is not nice and I keep him on a leash. It' s hard when unleashed dogs come running up at him and he goes Cujo. The owners act like I'm to blame. I've got my dog under control, I don' t think I'm to blame if another dog gets in his face.
He's very good with people, or I would use a muzzle when I walk him.
It's uncomfortable...I try to only walk him whem I think other people will not be out :(

ah yes the unleashed dog problem. I won't take my dog to our neighborhood park, 2 blocks away, due to the eejits who let their dogs run off leash. "He is friendly!!!!" they shout to me as they run up to my Cujo.
Tonight I spotted our neighbors' little old cute pug, walking around her tiny patch of yard off leash. They live, literally, 100 feet from Stray Rescue of St. Louis where pitbulls accustomed to winning dog fights in the ghetto would snap her in half, if she ran up to one of them being walked.
Humans are often too stupid for me to sympathize with any of their plights.
I know.several people who have to.carry a.firearm with them when out and about in their neighborhood, due to problems with dangerous dogs loose.
A man out jogging in Michigan.was killed after being attacked.by two dogs with a history.of issues.
Oh Tradd, that's awful. I know these 2 dogs didn't cause me any physical harm, but damn.......if they'd been on intent on it, they surely could have been capable of killing me. I couldn't believe how strong they were, just in their pushing me around.
I wonder, Cathy, if it wouldn't be a good idea to keep one of those paint ball guns handy. Shoot the friendlies and not only do you scare them away, but maybe the owners would get the idea that their dogs are in someone's sights.
pepper spray works well too.

Fri nite I was walking my big dog by a tiny park close to our house & a Pit off leash ran a block to attack us. I was screaming for the owner at the top of my lungs. I was so mad. My dog has 3 bites. The owner finally came over & pulled his dog off mine. I am now walking with half a baseball bat.
My brother was riding his bike the other night and a pit bull tried to bite him. Fortunately, it didn't break the skin. I hope your doggie is okay Terry.

He is fine- we just need to keep putting meds on wounds & hope they don't get infected. I actually was surprised at how vicious my dog became once he was fighting for his life (german shephard & husky mix). At home he is bossed around by 3 little Maltese. I also think he was protecting me. I really hope his dog has wounds also.
