View Full Version : Cats--Do they really make good Pets?
I don't know, but I've heard they are sneaky and can't be trusted. What is your opinion?

That's stereotyping!!!!!!!! I have had a cat since 1972 - not the same one obviously. The first cat, Oscar, lived with us till he was almost 17 years old. The second cat, Calvin, shared our home for almost 15 years. And now we have Morrie and Murphy who have been with us for 10 years. I can't imagine a time without one of these loving boys.
Different strokes for different folks. Some are dog people, some are cat people. I am one of the latter. Love my cat, and all who preceded her. I find them fairly predictable, if unpredictability is what you expect.

You can't be serious. Sneaky and can't be trusted?? I think you are pulling our collective legs.

Can't be trusted to do what? I mean, what are you going to trust a pet with?
Sneaky? Just because they can move quietly and surprise you with their presence? Just because they aren't as in-your-face as dogs?
Will a cat sneak people food if it can? Sure, most of them will. So will pet dogs, and rabbits, and gerbils.
All depends on what you are looking for in a pet. I know someone who says he hates cats. What good are they, he says. You can't take them hunting. Well, if you are looking for a hunting companion, then, clearly, no, a cat won't be a good pet for you.
But I have cats and they add much, much more to my life then they detract from it, stinky litter boxes included.
Good point, Miss Cellane. I would trust our two guys to be sure to get plenty of rest :) Interestingly, these two have no interest in our food whatsoever. I would never have believed such a thing to be possible, but it's actually great!
My cat is too sneaky...

I am very much a cat person....I find cats fascinating and I love that you have to earn their respect and their affection - they just don't hand it out and are quite capable of taking care of themselves on average and retain some measure of independence even as house pets. I love that you can go away for a long weekend and leave clean litter boxes out and ample food out and know that more than likely, your cat will be OK when you return. I love that they are more economical than dogs and that they don't on average need as much attention and fussing as dogs do. In my book cats are the perfect pet for an introvert which DING that would be me.
As a side note, on youtube Purina as a video about cat people and I have to say this is a very rare case of advertising that spoke directly to me and made me feel appreciated. Rob

Well OP, this catt certainly cannot be trusted--to stay out of boxes! it's Maru the box cat. (You all know that when we talk about cats I'll likely mention Maru even though I've got two of my own!)

Our cats try to be sneaky. If SO gets home before me (happens maybe once per week at most) and gives them dinner, when I get home they come running to the door like usual and tell me how hungry they are, even though they've eaten recently. I agree with the OP. Definitely sneaky and can't be trusted to tell the truth.

Or very smart and able to manipulate humans to get what they want. Depends on your point of view.

haha I remember my mom talking about how our cats "lie" about that.
Funny that this has been a day where I remember my mother a lot, hmmm, maybe she's hanging around the ether sphere.
Another thing about cats I've heard is: though they can be demonstrative--purr, lovey-dovey, etc., the fact is----they are just USING you! How do you like being used?

Well, in the winter when my cat is being purry and lovey-dovey and falling asleep on my lap, I appreciate the body heat--it's cold in my house. So I suppose I am using her, when I lure her on to my lap.
As for getting fed twice--part of the blame for that lies with the humans in the house, who aren't communicating with each other. The cats aren't stupid. They know how to get extra food. The humans just need to talk to each other to prevent that.
Frankly, Packy, it just seems as if you are afraid of the intelligence of cats. There are other, less intelligent pets you might want to consider.

They are social parasites, that's true. While one of my catts is an excellent hunter, she retired from that business many years ago when she became an indoor catt exclusively and now she does nothing to earn her keep.
A year ago last spring, I was out biking, and I saw a sign in front of a country place that said: "free kittens". So, I went back in my car the next day. The lady had two or three cats left; she said she needed to "get them out from underfoot"--but I'll keep the one that's left" She offered Me the mom, who was already spayed, which was a good deal; but she had this calico, (tortie and lots of white), kitten, prolly 9-10 weeks, and I went with that one. She seemed at ease in the car, unlike most cats, and as it turns out--is VERY good about keeping out of your way, not climbing the blinds, etc.; and she really grew into a pretty kitty. Fairly good sized--bulky but not fat, though the mother was tiny. She is a very mellow kitty--likes to sit in the window sill, and is not hyperactive or greedy for attention, & steers clear of trouble. Don't worry, though--I spayed her; or I should say--my vet did. Though, if you did want a cat to reproduce, she would've been a good one, given her traits. Nonetheless, I feel She is just Using Me.

Sometimes it's good to feel used. One of my favorite theater productions....."Cats".

Hmmm...I don't know Packy. I have two cats, but I don't think they are using me. I think they are plotting to kill me. :D

I've always been a dog person.....but I think I'm changing. My vet bills with dogs have always been so high and the stray cat that wouldn't go away (we found out our son was feeding her tacos) has had very small vet bills. Plus she is outdoors and doesn't like to be held. Her vet care has been regular shots, 1 spay, and 1 removal of a cancer tumor that didn't need further treatment. I don't even have to give her flea/tick medicine - never see a flea or tick on her. The one time I did she had seizures so we won't try that again. At 13 she is trim and agile, hunts less and thinks before jumping up on the railings, and enjoys long days sitting on the bench by the garden pond. She doesn't want to come inside but does appreciate a double cardboard box to block the wind with a fluffy pillow and a heating pad during the coldest of winter nights.
Last night, very late, I was at a convenience store--Hit-N-Run or Higher-N-Hell or one of those places' & just as I was leaving, a litter of kittens, prolly 3-4 months old, comes wandering into the parking lot, following their mom, sniffing around for dropped food and licking out of puddles. In the meantime, you have these dudes in pickups zooming into the lot, like they do, in a hurry to get a Pack O' Luckies an' a Corndog(delish!), or maybe a $3 slice o' pepperoni pizza(yum!) or whatever. I had to get out of there. I know those cats are doomed, living off the land like that in traffic. All I can do is take care o' the catt I got--and keep her safe. Even if she is just using me.
We have a pit bull, two Maine coon cats, one tiny black girl who is full grown at 4.2 pounds, and a huge orange and white cat with blue eyes who is not deaf. Both dogs and cats know what they want, when they want it, and how to get it. I consider that very smart!
