My friend was showing great results since going gluten free. So I decided to try it. I'm an "in for a penny, in for a pound" kind of gal, so I quit eating all grains and starches.

Grains: bread, rice, couscous (quinoa is a seed), pasta, etc. Whole grain, brown rice - still grains.
Starch: potatoes, refried beans (even if low fat & vegetarian), sugar, chips, etc.

I started last February. I was jonesing for carbs the first few weeks so I relented and had one small bowl of pasta con burro (w/butter) and parmesan. Since then I've had a scone or two. Haven't missed carbs at all.

I eat small amounts of protein and produce all day long. Dog loves the schedule as she gets kibble treats when I eat.

I've lost 48 pounds without adding more exercise.

I've had problems with mold allergies recently so I've consulted my regular MD as well as our local Naturopath (sp?). She had me complete some forms and give her a list of my meds and supplements. She nailed my grain allergy in minutes.

All the decades I've spent being tested by allergy MD specialists and no one thought to test for grains!?! I asked all my doctors (who advised Wt Watchers and other programs that didn't work): How can I be eating healthy foods, be hungry all the time, and be fat? Turns out carbs were not only slowing me down but burdening my immune system.

No matter. It's all good now.

Cutting out starches was a lucky choice. It turns out there is a huge association of starches to sciatica. My VERY painful sciatica of 4 years is now almost gone. (The book "Grain Drain" also explains a high coincidence of starches with dementia so you might want to check that out. Cutting potatoes made a big difference for my friend.)

I think Gluten Free is all the rage because ppl with hidden grain allergies are feeling hugely better.

Hope this helps someone you care about,
