View Full Version : Firewood racks?

I wasn't sure where to post this.
We got a log splitter, so our firewood will be in easier-to-deal-with sizes. We have a very long, covered porch and we usually just pile firewood up there, and cover it with a tarp. But I'd really like to get it off the ground, since we have a mouse problem. Anyone have any tips on which "models" are better than others? I've seen ones you can make with 2x4s and metal brackets, but I'm thinking steel would be better. Any advantage to the curved ones?
Thanks!

Ours is cement blocks with wood 2 X4 across. It's in the basement, though, not the wooden porch floor. It works pretty well.

Is there a place around there that sells used, creosote-treated railroad ties? Companies that sell salvaged building materials or landscaping supplies handle these. Those are good for stacking wood on.

I made mine from 2x4's and lag bolts, then used a waterproof deck sealant. I need to re-seal it about every other year, but wood has worked fine and is not showing signs of distress after about 8 years. It was sort of a fun project. Mine holds maybe a little less than an eighth of a cord which I stock from a stacked wood pile that I keep covered with plastic out in the yard. Wood, and I suspect metal, can get heavy. I'd probably look at portability if you want to move it out of the way in the off-season.
