I am planning and working ahead for the time I get a little burned out on the career I have. So I took the professional mediators course in May and have been slowly figuring out what to do next. It takes about 100 hours of mediation experience to be considered professional in our state, although there is no certification process formally. I started the process to be a volunteer mediator with a local county, a very large county actually with an extensive mediation service. It has taken a couple months between the application and the required orientation (they only do them twice a year). So last night I went to the orientation and I am officially a volunteer mediator. I need to do some observations and the mediations are with a co-mediator so this is very legit.

One great bit of news from last night is that one area they are trying to expand into actively is educational mediation. That is where I want to use my master's in education effectively, it is a lot more than just special education matters, truancy, family/teen issues, restorative justice, school community processes. I am very excited ( and wondering how I can find time but determined).

the other thing is that a 5th grade teaching position is coming up very very quickly. The teacher's last day is Friday and I just found out. The teachers in the school seem to think highly of me having a teaching job even though I am the before and after school person, but so far the principal has not responded other times I have applied. I will apply as soon as I am rested enough to write a coherent cover letter.

Well done! I think you are very wise to be planning ahead and laying the groundwork for being able to move into a career in a growing industry. Good luck with the job app, too!

Please keep us posted on this really neat career direction--I think it sounds wonderful and am investigating taking the 40 hour training.
