Several months back, iris lilies asked us to define "permaculture"--it's great concept, but notoriously difficult to define.

This popped up in my Facebook feed and I think it does a great job of explaining.

And notice that I posted this in "Environmental Issues" and not "Gardening." Too many people try to define permaculture as a set of farming principles only, when it's really a much broader umbrella than that.

I'd be interested in hearing the other Permies here weigh in.

Oh, that's a good one! I have my PDC and had trouble trying to put exactly what permaculture is into one sentence. I usually say something like "It is a way for humans to live in harmony with nature" , which doesn't really capture it.

A very interesting article. The illustration at the top is nice, too. This is the first time I've seen a detailed explanation of permaculture. I'm interested in practices that are sustainable.

#5, "Permaculture is a Systems Approach to Design", pretty well sums up how I explain what I'm trying to accomplish on our property (and hopefully beyond). People seem to get it when they realize everything is connected. I'm also a big flow chart guy and systems are easy to trace on flow charts.

I have a bumper sticker that says "everything is connected" and a bumper sticker with the peace sign on it, and I've set them on either side of the model name of my car, a Matrix. :D Maybe next year I'll trade out the peace sign for a cabbage.

Permaculture? Well, it's a term that attempts to make gardening (usually the province of old fogeys), sound more trendy. That's what I believe. Hope that helps you some. Thankk Mee.
