View Full Version : Little houses from Scotland

This one bedroom "Wee House" looks a lot more liveable than a Tiny House, and no climbing ladders to get into bed. This story has some additional photographs: http://www.houzz.co.uk/ideabooks/26893028?m_refid=uk-fb-content_26893028
Nice! Loved the shades of navy blue.
I have to agree that that looks much more livable than the tiny houses. Quite adorable. And especially if there will be more than one occupant and the climate doesn't allow for outdoor living most of the year. The ability to be in separate rooms at least some of the time is key to maintaining sanity for me. And I'm also not a fan of the loft bedspace concept in general, at least not in a full-time home. Other people may not care, but I really do want to be able to stand up in my bedroom.
But, to be fair to the tiny houses like Tumbleweed makes, part of what makes them cool is that they're on wheels and thus avoid much of the headache of building codes, etc. Not to mention the cost of building a foundation. Of course that also means that you can't have them everywhere, because it's illegal to park a tiny house in places like Sonoma County CA, so there are pluses and minuses to both.
Yes, they are much more practical than the cubicle-like tiny fad houses I've seen online, here. But, one thing I'd suggest is to design them with the roofline such that they can readily be added-on and look nice. The first one even has an extended paved area/patio. If you did that, with a possible addition in mind there later on, that would be good.
I really like the design of this little house. It is very liveable. Would be a great house for retirees. The little lakeside cabin DH and I live in is not much bigger than this...
No washer/dryer, where do the furnace and hot water heater go, almost no closet space, no outdoor storage or garage, and no tub. Boy am I turning into a prima donna in my old age!

Kib... According to the blurb on the photograph link, The washing machine is in the kitchen near the sink and the central heating is in a cupboard in the kitchen!

Yes, washing machine is under the countertop, with glass window in it. Often, these machines will dry, too. it is a cool idea but poor in execution; they take forever.
This is a lovely little house--I could live here as one person, not two who work at home, but that's just me. I'm sure some folks could.
I also love this and the fact there are no ladders to climb. Also agree there must be at least a stackable washer/dryer unit. But, where is their stuff, you know the stuff we all accumlate after years of being together? Christmas decor, old clothes, tools, lawn equipment. Guess this could be addressed with a separate storage building.
Tell you what I'd do: Put a roof over the "notched" patio area, screen it in, and live out there 6-8 months of the year. I sure would.
Great ideas! Even though DH and I are in our (very early) 70's, we aren't "there" yet. The biggest issue is that DH NEEDS a three-car garage, or workshop, for all his tools and all the things he does around the house and yard. He's always building or making something, plus his "hobbies" -- wood turning, and what not. We only have one car, so he doesn't need more car-space (he doesn't work on cars; just wood), and the car takes up far too much room in our two-car garage. He's often said he would like a one-bedroom house and a nine-car garage :D I'm happy if he's happy ...

With our weather?

If the washer/dryer combo has a delayed start feature we could totally make this work. I'd just set it to do a load of laundry every day while I was at work, starting about 2 hours before I expected to get home so it'd be finishing up as I walked in the door. We average about 4 loads of laundry per week for the 2 of us. Planning on spending 10 minutes folding clothes each evening when I got home would be totally doable.

Looks really very nice and absolutely liveably. From outside it seems to be very small. But the photos from inside reveals much more space than i thouht.
I'm a big fan of these types of little homes too. Thanks for showing it to us.
Although I love all things Scottish ("If it's not Scottish, it's crap"), I'm not overwhelmed by this little house--it's a BIT sterile and cookie-cutter for me--and L75,000 (I can't find the pound symbol) is high, I think.
Here's another 1 bedroom. Of course, you can't put a price on that view; however, I do like the design of the house as well.
