View Full Version : DH's silly fashion comment
Today DH asked me why so many women are dressed like elves. He was referring to the current trend of leggings and high boots. Made me laugh anyway...
LOL..I call them pirates. :)

Funny! My DH has commented on the trend but didn't call them elves.

Good observation, funny! Men can be quite astute in cutting to the chase on attire.
I was advised at a session this past week that men set the fashion and women follow and have for years. Would that have anything do with the new trend?

I didn't even know this was the fashion. I'm so out of touch. Sounds like something I could wear, though. Maybe I could even knit some leggings. I love elves! I'll have to check it out.

Love it pinkytoe. My DH has also commented heavily - and unflatteringly - for several years on the boots/leggings fashion thing. So I made a point this fall to find a pair of skinny jeans (ain't gonna go leggings, no sirree, not this old lady) at Goodwill, and have been recently wearing them tucked into my old Uggs-like boots.
To his credit, he hasn't said a word about it yet. And yet, I'm only wearing them to get a (hopefully humorous) response out of him. :)

Well, if you take The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings into account.
Some of the leggings look more like tights that would be under a dress. Some ladies just don't have the figure. But it is far better then the past many years of the "lounge" pants out in public I think. I got nice cable knit tights for winter, but wear them with sweater dresses. I love winter dressing.
The recent trend of wearing not-opaque yoga "pants" out in public is, well, I don't quite have the right words. Clearly "pants" means something different these days.
I asked DH if males are distracted by all these form-fitting clothes and he said well YES!

Indecent exposure, maybe?

I saw online some time back about some leggings being sold with tags that say "these are not pants". I shared it with DH, and it has now become an inside joke for us.
We frequently see poor silly women in public who obviously didn't read the tag, and are wearing leggings with a tight waist-high tee and I whisper to him "honey, she didn't read the tags" and we laugh and laugh, because yes, those are NOT pants.

Okay what does this really mean ? I don't get it.
Fashion is weird. To even be confused if an item is a tight or pajamas? I have worn jeans my entire life since I begged for Levi's in 1974. Been through every style jeans since then, staying with Levi's mostly. Two years ago I was at a loss on what style to wear??? I am slim and fit, but 54, skinny jeans nobody would want to see me in. It is hard not to find cuts other the skinny or slim. I switched to Boyfriend cut, loose but not Baggie. Heavens I did not want Mom jeans! My stack of Levi's all looked dated to me. Last year I hardly worn jeans. Last month I bagged up too many jeans and dropped at goodwill. I guess my years of jeans are over.

A problem with some of these translucent pants is that if they fit correctly, they're not translucent at all. Cuddle Duds, for example, only become revealing when stretched to the snapping point. Which apparently some people don't realize when they are delighted to fit into a "Small". :|(

That many designers are gay men? A lot of fashion trends originate on the street, so to speak, so if it ever was true, it's not so much anymore.
OK I'm guilty - I love leggings! But ONLY when worn with a really really long tunic style overshirt (ala the 1990's!) Yes, like boots too (UGH - LOTR's here I come!). To be honest I have kept wearing leggings as long as I can remember and can generally get away with them by wearing tennis shoes and calling them workout pants. I actually love that the style is back in as it is comfortable. But like ctg I prefer jeans. Hip hugger boot cut that are sooo untrendy now and hard to find. Also like her, have like the more baggy "boy friend" style. Those are so like the old Levi 501's my early teen years. Generally just live in shorts or yoga pants that are NOT see thru!

Spartana,
I picture a Eowyn avatar coming up.:laff:
I haven't worn jeans in better then 20 years. A few years ago, I had a dicussion with a few people about how there were so many thinner thickness of jeans now (started out as the hole in them as fashion discussion), then when I was a kid, and we had things like Toughskins and corduroy pants.
For Christmas, I gave my DIL a pair of leather leggings that she wanted. They were size 0 and they were so small, I rolled them up and put them in a tiny gift bag--the size you use for jewelry.
After a lifetime of trying on a gazillion jeans every fall and still hardly ever finding a good fit I am ecstatic about the leggings. NEVER with waist-high tops, though!
I wear them under skirts, dresses, and long tunics--can go directly to a yoga class after work, they are comfortable and look great as long as you stick with the right tops or dresses (see above comment about waist-high tops!!)
I have to admit though, if you look at those old Lost in Space videos....http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/d/da/Lost_In_Space.jpg/250px-Lost_In_Space.jpg
I'd like to know who decided that dressing a women in a skin tight, bulge fitting dress was the way to go. I saw one yesterday that made me stop and watch to see if she really could walk in the thing. I mean showing every curve , bump and bulge or crease in a standout way. Its just crazy that women are buying into this.
I think I fully understand now the term "slave to fashion". My office sits several stories over a tourist destination so when I get bored I can watch people from all over the place coming and going. There are indeed many women dressed like elves AND in outfits that some would say are much too tight for comfort at least.

I love winter dressing.
Me, too. I love the colors and textures and layers of winter dressing. Though today, here in Northern California, it was an outrageously warm day in the high 70's, so my leg warmers stayed in the drawer.

I'm also a fan of leggings -but then I've always aspired to be a Hobbit:
(Taken from Pinterest):
1. You eat at least 7 times a day
2. You're short and cute
3. It's perfectly acceptable to be chubby
4. Hobbits can go unseen and unheard if they wish
5. The Shire is beautiful
6. Most adorable little homes
7. Perfect little curly hair
8. Can walk around barefoot
I see no downsides to this.
As someone who is short, has curly red hair, likes to walk around barefoot, and has moved to a place that is as close to the Shire as she could find, I completely agree :)

Men like looking at thighs and butts? Some men, anyway, and only some thighs and butts. (Not mine!)

This is very cute and funny. I would love to live in The Shire.
