We are not going to engage in controversy, here. No, we are just going to go nostalgic by recalling some memorable SL posters. I would like to start it off with one I've tried to recall the moniker, the onscreen name of, but can't--gee, I guess they aren't that memorable, huh? But, yes, they are. It was evidently some guy, said he was from Washington D.C.(maybe), and was a trucker. Pretty atypical profile. But, the only thing he ever did was post Topics, making some heavy-duty, thought-provoking statement, in the form of a question. One, at a time, week after week. But, he'd never join in the discussion or make any kind of self-disclosure. Just posted thread topics, on serious subjects. Finally, there was a discussion on "just who IS this fellow?" and it seems the Moderators tried to contact this poster, but got no response. What do you think of that? Thankk mee.

I've been here a very long time, but under several names. Just got tired of some of the names. Labyrs was the first one, because DH and I were "into" labyrinths then, and still are (we have one in our back yard and "built" one at our church as well). I think I was was Serendipity at one time, too. And some others. Hmmm. And now I'm Francie, which is a childhood nickname. I remember Sam Gribley, and there were some great conversations with him. And his "alias", "Wes" something", I think?, but I can't remember that one (I'm old now) ... BAE's been here forever too. I went to Orcas Island many years ago to Indralaya Institute to help build their labyrinth (and you can see it on their website, and I can see the "gifts" we all left in the center of the labyrinth, my own included). I wondered where BAE lived at that time. And I've taken "time out" now and again, but never quit checking on the site, even if I haven't posted much the past few years. And was there Little Bitty Bobby? ... (or was that from some other site?) I do recognize a lot of the names here, still, but it's the ones who've moved on I just can't remember their names ...

You kids just want to stir the pot, now don't you? But, I get the blame for the controversy! Very clever of you kids. Yes, I see how it works. There used to be a frequent poster who was from Australia, living in the USA, but then she went back home. It seems like she posted after her return home, but not as often. Then there was "24prins", a lady from New Jersey, and Find__Flo, a Lady who was very knowledgeable about a lot of things, and one day she asked about how to convert her car to run on used fry oil. Then, you had Diana in Wisconsin, a woman with a variety of life experiences, and an entrepreneur & uncharacteristically conservative (for this board), who was what I'd classify as a real Country girl. <I'm not disparaging her, now, so don't go alerting her, telling her I am. Then, there was um, oh yes--before I even happened upon this board, there was "BillyBarebutt". Nobody knew where he went after SL, but they sure knew where he'd been. I went through the archives, and read every post by him I could find, and I figure he must've gotten a job as a AM radio talk show host. Or could have. He was very funny, clever, articulate, logical OR wicked, cruel and horrible, depending on your particular point of view. Whoops! I slipped a little judgement in; said I wouldn't do that. Then, there was Sylvan, from Canada( the Techie specializing in Apple computers, was it?), and that was a long time ago. He initially was on there a lot, but got bored and moved on. Lets see, you had a very young woman named Darwinfish, on here. There was "Buck", who tangled with people for the darndest reasons. People that are still here from way back when: Ha--of course there's IrisLily aka FauxPas, who prolly has twice the total post count of the next two in line, combined. Well, doesn't she? Then there's Florence, from Tx that we see here occasionally. And you have oh, Songbird, who I think used to be another moniker, and also the former Paula P, who is now the esteemed "Shadowmoss Oh, yes--they used to have a frequent poster/moderator named Tricia, who may still be here under another name, but I'm not for sure. And, at least one other who has had a name change. Then, I see that Bartleby, is still around. Then, there is the unforgettable "Crystalcheryl", and she was very unforgettable. But, I already said that. I'll prolly think of others, but meanwhile, someone else can continue with it....Hope that helps you some..Thankk Mee.

Hey, Packy,

How about Chickadee who lived on a houseboat or something small like that? And Christine--she goes way back to the Wampler era, but I always related to her. And we haven't seen Humboldt Girl in a while, either--she popped in a while back but hasn't been back since. And Spartana's friend, Gary--he used to post all the time.

I share your nostalgia--I still love everyone here, of course--but it's like when your oldest kids leave the nest to go to college you still have the rest of the family, but you miss the ones who flew the coop.

I've wondered if we had a "front end" website like Dave's old one, with other products and services that would help attract people here. I used to look forward to Dave's newsletters and I would always browse his simple living bookstore--I did buy from him now and then.. I'm quite sure he didn't get rich on us, but it was still a great offering.

Francie--nice to hear from you--I think I forgot that you used to be Serendipity/labyrs

Songbird

And you have oh, Songbird, who I think used to be another moniker

Packy, you are correct! I was Hummingbird on the old SLN. There are so many I miss from the old boards. We had great discussions and there was always a variety of interesting topics going on at all times.... I was inspired and encouraged by other posters then in living a simpler life, paying off all of my debt, and retiring at a younger age, which I finally accomplished recently. I learned so much back then, and I always smile remembering some of the more colorful posters. A lot of us bucked heads with Buck! And boy, that littlebittybobby was a hoot! ;)

I do a lot of reading here, but don't post as often. This place has a different feel to it...not bad, just different.

I do wonder what happened to Tricia. She and I got together for beer and garlic bread at Fletcher's, a pizza place I tended to use to meet folks. She wasn't in a good space last time I met with her, and dropped off the scene here about that time as well. I wasn't in a good space myself and didn't follow up.

Ctg492, I took that name way back when I first went online 1999 ish and signed into a Persian Cat forum. I had no idea what a screen name was, it stated the usual letters and numbers. Which I did.

@ctg492 I think its harder to think of numbers and letters as a "real person" than a name. Plus, I always confuse you with another poster that has numbers and letters and starts with c that lives in Western Massachusetts.

LOL -- that must be me! Yes, my unusual letter combo doesn't make a real word so I'm sure it confuses many. But it's been my online persona for nearly 20 years and is a reference to a childhood nickname that only my brothers would understand. :D

And, of course Dave Wampler (I think it's Wampler) - the founder. Wonder if he ever checks in here. My list would look a lot like yours, these were active posters when I first signed up in the mid 90's.

There was a man who posted as Tightwad. He had lots of good advice and some heated arguments. I think he was a military veteran.

I also remember Danny; she was from Ontario, and wrote interesting posts.

Then there was Mrs. Mizerley...

This was around 2007 and 2008. After that we had internet problems, really bad dial-up service, and I was offline for quite a while. I used to post as greenfern.

I often wonder what happened to ScreamingFlea. I really hope she is all right. I think I have been around since sometime in the '90's...wow, that's a long time. I don't post much (I'm terrible at typing and it takes me forever to compose what I want to say) but I do drop in almost every day for inspiration and encouragement from like-minded people.

SiouzQ: Yes, I also think about Screaming Flea and hope things are going well for her. We haven't heard from Maxamillion for awhile. She is so talented at making miniature clothes for the dolls she collects.
I only found the Forums the year before the old Forums shut down. I was so distressed when I thought they were just going to be gone; I'm so glad that wasn't the case.

ScreamingFlea
Jill Sanders
HoosierNan

Buck - for some reason I associate him with smoking a professor's pipe, is there a reason for that?

Zigzagman

Mrs. M - I will never look at a laundry pin the same way.

Zoebird - Did she ever tell us how the transition back to the States from NZ was for her?

Someone mentioned "Jonathon", the fellow from Minnesota. I guess he was really very involved in defining and promoting the whole concept of Simple Living, did some writing on the subject, and as part of his research, traveled around and met certain, selected participants of the forum. Also, spent a lot of time posting and moderating. I believe he not only did that, but owned a nice, older home and maintained it, and held a very good job as IT man at a major hospital, and was pursuing yet another college degree! Wow. I would guess he probably decided to downsize & simplify a bit, and unless he is posting occasionally under an alias, is no longer active with this. Maybe he's on another board. Don't know.

I met Jonathon and his wife once at a Midwest Renewable Energy Fair. They dropped off the radar soon after that, though (no relation to the two events I hope). I also met Dave WisconsinBadger. I wrote a short piece as a reference for the last carnation of the SL site and Jonathon helped with the editing. He was a very sharp guy and a good writer. You can't. If someone closes their account their comments remain. The status associated with those existing comments changes from member to guest, but they won't be able to post anything else unless they reactivate their account.

Okay--how could I forget--"Bronxboy". I see Bronxboy is still registered, but hasn't been active for several years, now, unless he's a lurker. Packy I seem to recall some of your posts saying 'little bitty' or 'itty bitty'. Doubt that is a coincidence.

I think of WJ Simon often. Wonder how her daughter is doing. Someone exposed or outed WJ on the old site if I remember that right.

I remember Screaming Flea moved across country with her dog. She worked in customer service I think.

HoosierNan- I thought she passed away from the cancer. Didn't she leave her husband and then found out she had cancer. or vice versa.

Jill Sanders- lots of drama there.

Isn't Homenurse now domesticgodess?

Matisse! I've been trying to remember her name for ages, so thanks! I remember once that Trisha or Pat somebody had fallen on really hard times and Matisse set up a paypal account for her and basically challenged us to put our money were our mouths were. I don't know how it ended up but I know I donated and had several offboard conversations with her about the situation. I think she finally was banned for being too rude to less liberal posters. I seem to remember that Sylvan was banned for the same thing. I had a different name on the old board, but I remember all of the aforementioned posters fondly - especially Billy BareButt. He was very funny. He was also a great advocate of the agricultural extension service.

Don't feel bad, I used to post/read a lot over a number of years. I haven't been here in over a year but I'm eating lunch at my desk and need a bit of an escape. No one missed me either apparently, lol.

I haven't had much time on the internet the past couple of years. New much more demanding job, got within 10K of paying off the old house and then had a mammoth undertaking of a fixer-upper house, finally got new house liveable and now started a dissertation.

Earlier this morning, a colleague sent me a piece about fundraising and the Lunar New Year, titled "Dispatch from China to Advancement Offices" and randomly I wondered what Lhamo was up to these days. So, that's how I ended up here today.

I definitely think of the regulars here from time to time...everyone here helped shaped my values, etc around finances and leading a generally simpler life.

I still pop in from time to time. Still in China, though hopefully not for too much longer. I decided to visit the group page and while I was there, I was reminded of several other groups I belonged to that I'd forgotten about. Puglogic and LooseChickens.

LooseChickens....the nudist;), the person who introduced me to organic sheets that would last a lifetime (Coyuchi) oh my, that was many many years ago when I was here with a different name myself! (QuiltR)

I'm trying to remember the guy I used to "argue" with about $ vs CC (we use for travel points). No way would he believe we didn't' spend more. The arguing got old.

And I can't remember the name of the ultrafrugal woman who lives on next to nothing and moves around CA with some frequency. Man oh man this 56yo brain misses it's memory! I always admired her es·prit de corps about the simple living lifestyle.

The nudist=BillyBarebutt, right? Are you talking about Spartana (the ultra-frugal woman)? She was on these new boards for a while but we haven't heard from her a couple of years now. I miss her--and her friend Gary (I always thought they were married). And Chickadee on the houseboat, and there was a poster, Christine, who I really connected with. And whatever happened to Stella?

My brain says LooseChickens was also a nudist. She and DH were in their 60s and lived in a motorhome moving around......or is my memory truly shot?

YES! Spartana...and that wasn't her only name here.....

I miss Loosechickens and Spartana....both were cool in my book. There was a poster at very beginning of my time here back in 2005 who was named Matisse - not always pleasant but had some good posts, regardless, I've wondered for some time whatever happened to Matisse. Rob

That's so cool about Matisse doing that....and I'm glad someone else has noticed this person's absence, too. Rob

I occasionally see Spartana over on the MMM forums.

Yes, Loose Chickens. She was inspirational to me. I still think about Hoosiernan and WJ (?) Simon on occasion, RIP. =(

I was thrilled to meet lhamo and shadowmoss in real life this year, after 14 or so years of forum "knowing".

Oh, yeah! Hoosiernan.

mtlaurel and I also had lunch one day. Turns out she lived only a few miles from me, but she moved to another state. (Strange coincidence, her DH was my BIL's boss one year). It was really weird to meet a virtual friend, actually, but I had a great time.

And WJSimon was such a paragon of strength and courage. Kestra, do you know for a fact that she succumbed to cancer?

No, I do not. Just seemed sadly inevitable.

Someone who did know and has since passed away herself, confirmed WJSimons' passing. There was a little controversy about finding out WJ's name IRL when confirming but I don't remember much of it at all.
I always admired Jonathan who seemed the pillar of the old SLN and wrote a book about simple living in the city.

Did Hummingbird not change her name and then mention some personal health challenges at a late time?

Pansy and I met IRL along with another person whose name I cannot recall right now. She had written a story and some members thought that the story was a real situation and were very upset when they found out it was all a fictional account.

I remember him from when I first arrived here August 2005 and I miss his posts. I actually miss all the old crew - Trisch, Jonathan, KIB, and a few others I can't think of off the top of my head right now. Rob

Hummingbird had a few names. She died of a stroke last year at a young age, I am not even sure she was 60.

Jonathan helped me with a writing project several years ago. He was a good writer and generally sharp guy. He was indeed one of the pillars in the early days.

I also recall Jonathan fondly. I think he dropped out after Dave gave up SLN, right?

I loved Cougar Annie! Before and after finding out she was a "story".
