On Leadership of Self! Yep, now not only is everyone excellent and gets a trophy as a child but we are promoting ourselves to 'leaders' whether or not we have any actual people we lead. The description says basically we do our job and collaborate with others. It is the everyone gets an award taken to the adult level, sigh
I think back to my elementary school career (the late 70's) and now I wonder if I was somehow permanently damaged because I sometimes got red, green and yellow ribbons at field day. I almost never got a first place blue ribbon. Why couldn't they have just given everyone blue ribbons for everything??? I'm sure my life today would be much better if they had.

While this sounds to my ears like a dry comment which would normally make me laugh, I suspect you don't intend it that way.
Sigh, ok. Give jp1 the blue ribbon.
I never got a blue ribbon of any kind in anything athletic. Let me assure you that out in real life, once we were past the herd exercises that make up public school events, I excelled at many things that the jocks did not. I didn't even know that I was competitive until I was well into my 20's when I discovered that I cared about some things enough to best others. I also later found that I am reasonably coordinated and could play tennis or golf ok, but I care so little about hitting a ball, I can't even finish a game let along beat anyone else at it. It is simply dull, so I don't mind that others are out there chasing those little balls and collecting blue ribbons for it.

Yes, I'm glad you laughed. That was my intention. Frankly, except first semester calculus where I got a D-, gym class was my worst grade in high school. Thank goodness I only had to take one year or it would've screwed up my GPA...

oh good! Now I FOR SURE want you to have that blue ribbon for making me laugh. That's the job of the world, keeping me entertained!

Fits right in there with the declaration at my old place that we were now all responsible for our own career paths.
Oh, except for when there were no promotions or job changes, owing to "the bad economy". Or when we could not get the training needed to make the move. Or because we hadn't done the job for a year or two before getting the title/promotion because "you have to prove you could handle the job first" (WTF??). And because promotions were planned at least a year in advance. >8)

yep that's the way it is, even with a "good economy"

training, what's that? Almost never happens.

yes few will hire you for something you haven't done before pretty much, either internally or externally (and in fact it's often FAR EASIER to convince an external company to hire you this way, so even if it's not easy at least with an external company there is a chance), no matter how much you've trained and educated yourself
oh good! Now I FOR SURE want you to have that blue ribbon for making me laugh. That's the job of the world, keeping me entertained!I went through the exact same. He's kidding, smile. Oh wait, maybe he's not kidding, brows knit. Yes! He's kidding! Smile!
The thing I find so puzzling - beyond JP1, that is - is this: do these people getting blue ribbons for Least Number Of Coffee Breaks Taken and Quietest Farter In Staff Meetings actually feel good because of them? Do they believe it, do they take pride in these things? Someone Noticed Me not hogging the Cremora, thereby affirming that I'm a worthwhile and outstanding human being, here's my award ceremony on me-tube in case you missed it? Is their self esteem improved one iota ... and if not, exactly who benefits from all this award spin?

I just about snorting something out of my nose, you should warn me about these things, :)
