Some creep just tried to buy a piano with my credit card, but there were apparently some red flags with the transaction, so luckily the company called me to verify the purchase. It also turns out the misdirected package from Best Buy that we received the other night and returned to sender was not just a simple mistake either; the credit card company showed a $700 Best Buy charge on my card too. I guess at least they didn't try to deliver a piano to my house!

That is creepy. I hope the next generation of credit/debit cards are more secure than what we have now. It's time the card companies got smarter....

It isn't just about the card. The card has protections (legally mandated), and the user has responsibilities that the companies have reasonable expectations for you to follow, but where I have experienced, heard and seen the most damage lately is in the storage/transmission of the data. When mine was stolen, months later I got a letter from a processing service that handles multiple companies services, and they were hacked.
I and others have talked about some of the security issues on another (operating system) forum. Because in the case we were discussing, the peoples data was kept in the clear, rather then encrypted. Encrypted wouldn't have helped since they obtained a root users (administrator) password, but I was pretty sure that Hipa required the data to be encrypted.
