Alan is so cool! He is now paying for DH to practically have a private airplane!

DH flew from St. Louis to Fort Dodge Iowa on a commercial flight. He was the only guy in the plane. This is going to cost DH$109 dollars round-trip.

This run of a commuter plane is heavily subsidized by Nanny G.

Thanks, Alan!

Ya know back in my corporate days I flew on private planes fairly regularly. Falcon 900's, Gulfstream III, IV and V. As I recall, in 2005 the average hourly cost to keep a Falcon 900EX in the air was about $3500. So, by my out-of-date calculations that one hour each way round trip cost someone approximately $7000.

No wonder I can't get ahead!

Iris Lillies, what did I miss? DH is a pilot? Are you comfortable with him flying?

I ask as my DH flys with his associate when they go on day trips to far to drive for work. He wants his license as OH Boy think of the time saved and he loves it he says. I am not comfortable with this, matter of fact I ask not to even know when he is doing these trips weekly now. I guess I need to get over this.

No, I wouldn't want DH piloting a small plane, but he's just a passenger in this commercial plane, the only passenger. He made a trip to Iowa. The taxpayers footed the bill as part of a program to provide more air service to rural areas. That is very expensive.

IL's dry humour on display but it took a while to figure out what was happening as I didn't know about the subsidized flights. Part of me is sitting on the fence with subsidizing such services. What is the rationale for the extra flights? are the current for-profit services inaccessible and the subsidy is an effort to show that additional services are needed and used?

Well, I did edit it a bit to make more sense.

We always rib Alan, the Everyman taxpayer, about paying for Obamacare, and now he is paying for commercial flights to "unserved" areas. He has unlimited money!

I I don't know the passenger traffic pattern other than what DH told me. He and the copilot chatted quite a bit during the two hour flight because he was the only passenger.

Anyway there are four flights each day from St. Louis to Fort Dodge and back. According to the copilot the first and last flight of the day is usually full. The middle flights not so much.

Alan, how about chipping in a little for me. I'm planning on flying either to Marathon or St Pete tommorow for lunch. A little avgas would be nice.

Sure, stop by Sheltair in St Pete. Tell Rich to put it on my tab.

I got my Plane and license about 3 years ago. I had already quit working so we use it only for pleasure trips. I sometimes just go out and fly just to bore holes in the sky. The wife likes it to go places. If a plane goes down anywhere in the country it makes the news, a car crash is not news worthy unless it's a school bus.

I am limited to weather conditions though. You just can't take off and fly through thunderstorms ,high winds, and fog. In three years I have only been stuck one time due to weather. That was over Christmas so I just stayed a extra couple of days.

It it is expensive though, I figure $2000 per month flying a little over 100 hours a year. Its like owning a boat, RV, race car, ect. You can't really justify it, you just like it. I Think il go over to the hangar now and just hang out with the other airplane owners. Maybe fly around the pattern a few times.

I'll probably go to Albert Whitted, I think Sheltair has the FBO there also. I figure lunch and make the wife happy and do the Salvidor Dali museum.

I can understand why he was the ONLY passenger on a plane bound for a littlebitty town way up north in the middle o' nowhere, because no one wants to GO there, anyhow. But, there should have been a full booking on the outbound flight, of people leaving for good! Ha. BTW, did DH go up there to eat pizza n' pork T's that stick waaaay out over the bun n' deep-fried grease w/extra mayonnaise at the various food places around there? Just curious.

You know very well that the residents of that ittybitty teenytiny town in the middle of nowhere are without locker meat because the locker burned down. Probably there is no pork to be had there.

Actually, DH is attending a fish fry this weekend. The fish were caught in a Minnesota trip.

Well, since we are talking about the senseless stuff rednecks do, lemme ax you this: I bought two bags of "wild bird seed" which I scatter on my walk out in front, so the useless catts can sit at the window, and be entertained. Kind of like Moooovvveees n' Football. Anyway, there is a pair of mourning doves and a gray squirrell that live in the Elm Tree. They are regulars at the bird food. My question is: should I go ahead and pretend I'm a sniper & an "outdoor sportsman", like Ted, and shoot the Doves and the squirrel, just for some good all-American patriotic fun?

Packy: Since you're asking, I'll vote no. We provide similar entertainment for our cats here (I think it's more analogous to live theater than movies). Today we put out a pile of stale almonds (I get no frugal points for this one) and we enjoyed watching a squirrel eat one, hide one, eat one, hide one. He was very enthusiastic and very systematic.

Okay, I guess I'll let 'em live. Get my jollies some other way--maybe buy a Hardly-Doitson with no mufflers, and rev it up at all hours. I think that squirrel has been living out there for several years, now.

dmc: bore holes in the sky, that is the term he uses too. Can't justify it like a race car...oh goodness have you met my husband in person? You must have.? He took his car to the airport and went up in a stunt plane, then took the pilot around the track in his car. Crazy in my mind, but I suppose the helmets would save some part.

Ted would eat them, so if you want to roast Doves and stew squirrel go ahead. Though not much meat on either.

I flew my wife and a couple of friends to St. Pete on Sunday. We had lunch and went to the Salvador Dali museum. I didn't realy care for the museum, but the wife liked it and it was a good excuse to go flying. It also saved us about 2 hours over driving. Next trip is key west, it's a hour to hour and half flight compared to five hour drive. The wife even mentioned that she would be OK with me buying a faster plane, but the move up for something faster than the Bonanza is pretty expensive. Or experimental.

I use to have a couple of old 911's, I sold them to justify buying the plane. They of coarse have shot up in value and the plane has not.

Well Alan, as happy as I am to have you watching my back I need you to step up the game a bit. Looking at flying to North Dakota, about 80 minutes in the air, it was $330 cheaper to fly to Paris. The socialists are undercutting the oil lobby.

Though not much meat on either.Tell you what: by god, there ain't nothin' better'n skewered squab shish kebab barbequed on a rotisserie, slathered with my own secret savory herb bird barbeque sauce--it's got the right amount o' brown sugar in it to give it that crispy golden brown that makes it yummy, scrumptious, delish, and mouth watering, by god. So, when I got up this morning, the first thing I did was check to see if my Pet Doves had enough bird food out there, and there they were by god, chowing down, by god. Then along came Mr Squirrel(which tastes a little like rabbit, but I have my own secret recipe of barbeque sauce and select combination o' hardwoods to stick under the rotisserie and roast 'em to yummy perfection. By god. Plus, a toothpick to walk around all day with, hanging out o' my mouth, to pick the meat out from between my teeth, and look "Cool Hick", by god. That's what America is all about--you can thank your vets that fought for the freedom to cook n' eat meat!

Well, I believe the problem started when Alan decided that those few people in that little bitty po-dunk area were so important they needed to have more power in voting than a more populated area where the plane would be full of passengers. if we had one man/woman one vote instead of the system we have now, we (our government, i.e. nanny G) would recognize the area for what it is (tiny sparsely populated) and have air service to match. I think Alan feels that a small area with 10 people should have more say that an area with 100 people, thus the empty plane.

For me, I think people who want to live in a small, sparsely populated area/state should accept that reality and not expect special treatment for their choice. Internet access, phone service, medical service, sure. These things certainly should be in all corners of a modern, progressive nation. Air service to a small area? Not so much.

Hell yeah, sing it, baby!

You wanna live rural? You give up big city perks. But Nanny likes "leveling the playing field."
