We are planning to buy some furniture in the fall...two lazy-boy chairs that do not look like a lazy-boy. It has been quite a long time since we have bought any furniture and we don't know what brands are the best quality anymore. We've been searching around looking at some reviews but it hasn't helped us much. Maybe some here could point me in the right direction? Thank you....

We bought most of our furniture from Ethan Allen or Thomasville. Fairly expensive, but good stuff and built to last. Lazy-Boy has some nice looking stuff these days, we did consider them when we bought living room furniture, but we found something we liked better at Thomasville.

Furniture quality has slipped a lot in the last 40 years. We bought 2 La-Z-Boy chairs recently and both broke down in less than a year. The warranty covers parts but labor and transportation to the repair facility is not covered. The 40 year old La-Z-Boys are still in good shape. Hancock Moore and Bradington-Young, both American made are of good quality. I am not opposed to buying used and having it recovered.
Lazy-Boy. Lasted my folks FOREVER, local comp would come and fix if ever needed. I think the company became Lazy. I have bought three LBs in the last few years of different styles. I am staring at one now, a casual style not recliner,,,,cheap cheap cheap is be way to say it. I am not sure that name hold true with quality anylonger. Furniture has gotten so cheaply made. I assume it is all throw away after a short period of time anymore.

Sounds like you are having the same experience as we are having. We are using my parents 40 year old La-Z-Boy chairs which are of good quality. I was told that new La-Z-Boy furniture is made in China and when we compare the old to the new construction and mechanisims, the new furniture truly is cheaply made.

I agree, the vintage furnitire I have is all of much higher quality than anything I've seen new.
That being said, I've heard good things about furniture from Room and Board (quite pricey, though.)

The stuff that's vintage now has already survived 50 years. So it is a choice of the best things from that time - all low quality items from the same time have gone to the landfill already. This makes us thing that stuff from that time is better - because we only see the good ones that are still around. ;)

Haven't bought new furniture for 20+ years - but I would purchase Flexsteel again. Middlin' affordable and it's held up well.
Chris, Flemington Dept. Store has decent furniture, including Flexsteel. They carry many different brands and styles. Of course, Ethan Allen and Thomasville are top quality (we have several pieces that are very old and still look great); for wood pieces I would stick with those if you are planning on keeping them forever. For upholstered, I'd go with something else. For me, my taste in styles and colors change and I'd get tired of the same thing. Reupholstering is an option (another thing we are considering with an older well-built couch) but finding someone good to do it is tough.

Thanks Pony Mom, that is a good reminder, we went there about twenty years ago and the furniture held up very well...what is flex steel like? Is that referring to the frame?

Thank you so much everyone for all you replies. Luckily yesterday there was a post on Facebook on what to look at for a new piece of furniture. So along with your replies I feel much more confident...thank you...

We've been very happy with the Broyhill furniture we've bought over the years. Dining room table and chairs, and end tables in the living room still look great after almost 30 years. We bought a new Broyhill sofa about 8 years ago which also still looks great in spite of daily use by us, and our dog and cats. Very impressed with how the fabric on the cushions and pillows plus the frame still look and perform like a brand new sofa... Price was very reasonable too. They have a Broyhill website where you can design your own furniture and try different fabrics on the sofas and chairs. Fun. :) You can purchase it if you want and have it delivered to your house. We bought ours from a local furniture store though. Most any good furniture store carries the Broyhill brand. Personally, I would never buy another Lazy Boy product after the experience we had with a recliner we bought for my Dad about ten years ago. It literally fell apart!</p>

Thanks songbird for all of the information. The set we have now is Broyhill and we have had it for over 17 years and through four dogs. It has held up really well. I'm going to look through the website....and see what I find. Chris
