I've decided to sort through all of our boxes of old printed photos, pick the ones we want to keep, send them off the be scanned and get rid of the rest.

Has anyone used any of these services, such as scanmyphotos.com? At just over $.11 per photo with the various extra options I want/need they seem to be the best price for 1,000 photos from what I found when researching the various services.

Just wondering what people's experiences were in terms of scan quality and such.

I bought something through groupon...not sure which company it was but it wasn't until I was about ready to mail everything off that I saw there was additional charges for every different size. Like if 700 of them were 4x6 then there were 300 that were 3x5. Each of those 3x5 would have an upcharge. I ended up not using it. Just saying so that you make sure to read every bit of the fine print.

i worked in a photo lab at target and worked it out so i could scan all of my own, the managers were okay as long as i didn't have other orders and i paid for the materials. Not sure if a local place would be worth at least comparing prices, especially if you tell them to only do it during slow times over a month. it would help to have a friend there, not that many photo labs are left.

Yeah, no kidding about the fine print. The site I mentioned above offers a 1,000 picture deal for $39.99. The $.11/photo price I came up with is adding in 4 other fees including having different sized pics, minor color correction, etc. Obviously that's a lot more than $.0399/pic, but $.11 is still a great price compared to months of spending weekends scanning them all myself. $113 seems like a great deal to get this project done. Now if only they would also sort through all the pics and figure out which ones were worth saving. I'd be willing to pay them twice as much for this project if they'd take on that part as well... :~)

what i did also with this project was pick a small number of photos when visiting my parents and then making 3 CD's for my siblings and myself. if you have family members who would also like certain ones that is a great gift.

I asked at the walgreens by my office and they wanted almost $1.00 per photo and didn't offer much discount for large quantities. Maybe Target or somewhere similar would be cheaper, I don't know, but frankly $.11/photo seems like a bargain and I can't imagine anyone coming in too much cheaper. I assume that these online places can offer cheap prices because they have a lot of labor saving equipment for bulk scanning, (much moreso than a Target would) since this is their core business, so they can keep their costs low.

Of course maybe I should get a weekend job at the Target photo lab for the next 6 months or so. Not only could I do my scanning for free, but I could earn $11.05/hour while I was doing it!

sounds like a good idea! just kidding, i think our charges were low back then but they realized that it wasn't cost effective. i think you will get the best price from a bulk place but working at walgreens or target for a few months could make you appreciate almost any other job out there!

We scan our own at home. Takes some time but you can't beat the price. Rainy day projects during winter.

Winter used to be rainy here but now that CA has become the desert state...

I had a scanner once. An early one. Horrible thing. I actually threw it out my office window (2nd floor) one day and it landed in the driveway in front of the open garage door on our studio. My husband came out with a "WTH?" I just yelled out the window "Don't ask".

I know they've come a long way since then...maybe I should look into one again.

That made me laugh. Been there and done the same with a book.

i need to get rid of my home printer, they don't last! it is horrible, so i print at work if it is only a couple pages, if i need something more i go to the copy places and just pay for computer time or bring it on a flash drive. the home ones are not worth it,
