Yes--this happened waaay out west, in the Peoples' Republic Of Washington. Terrible situation. A heterosexual couple was just driving along, with her(and presumably his)6-month old infant with them, when an enormous chunk of concrete from an overpass being worked on fell right smack dab on their pickup truck, and smooshed them like bugs. 'Cording to news reports, which everyone knows are not reliable anymore, the couple was very active in their church; it said they were "youth ministers". I also am assuming they enjoyed Pizza, too. Prolly had a Wedding Cake, and ordered it with no questions asked, as well. There is something for everyone in this thread, so there's no excuse not to throw in your 2 cents. We'll start with Mr BAE: As a first responder, how would you go about extricating the victims? For you kids with a theological bent: How does God let things like this happen? For the Cynics:How much will the Lawyers make on this one? Will the crew on the construction project get to keep their jobs, after this flub-up? Just curious. Not trying to be funny.

Few years ago, a family was driving out in the country. I forget why. A huge tree just chose the time they were driving by to fall on their car and kill them all. Some things are just fate.

Some things are just fate.Still, though; you'd think they'da seen it coming. They have these 1920's concrete railroad underpasses here, several of them, and each time I drive under 'em, I can't help but look up to see if maybe it isn't starting to crumble. One day, I had to go under one, when a train was rumbling across it. There were cars behind me, in a hurry, so no way could I just stop and wait. I risked it and continued on. But in the future, I may take an alternate route.

Every time I drive under an overpass (not often) I think of the Loma Prieta quake and the pancaked freeway. Then there's that bridge that collapsed--up north--just because a semi clipped it...Think of the disasters I've missed out on, being the stay-at-home type.:~)

When I was learning to drive. mother of a friend of mine reminded me that if I happened to be passing a semi when one of its tires blew, chances are I'd be a road alligator myself. Thank you, Margaret.

When I was learning to drive. mother of a friend of mine reminded me that if I happened to be passing a semi when one of its tires blew, chances are I'd be a road alligator myself. Thank you, Margaret.Yeah, and that's another thing. I live next to an interstate highway, and very frequently you heard a loud boom!! and a flap-flap-flap sound, coming from the highway. Sounds like an explosion, but it is a tire from a tractor/trailer rig. There are chunks of tire tread all over out there; Maintenance crews have to come by and pick that stuff up. I knew someone who had a semi tire blow up, as he was passing it; it broke the drivers-side window in his car and dented the door. S'why, when I am on the interstate, I get by those semis, and out of their way. That, and the fact that the driver may be taking a snooze at the wheel. A semi-driver who lives a few mile from me, aged 76 at the time, had a "senior moment" on a routine run back through OK, and ran into the rear of a line of cars on the Turnpike that were stopped on account of another accident. His inattention caused the deaths of 10-11 people, not to mention the property damage. I don't ever get into my comfort zone out there on the highway. I don't understand the "car jock" lifestyle, either.

Hey Packy. Indy just spent millions (lots) to lower a section of I65/I70 in town because the truckers could not stop hitting the bridges with their too tall loads. The city installed cameras and showed on TV just what was happening. One beam was pushed out and could have fallen. I think there were 5 or 7 city street overpasses in this area because it is right downtown.

I was driving on a smaller street and saw a box truck that was demolished when he drove under a short train overpass and we have another old train overpass that is crumpled from being hit by trucks.

I don't get the joy of driving either. There is no "open road" anywhere around here and the ratio of cars to huge trucks on the freeway is about two to one. On the occasion when I have to do much freeway driving, my white knuckles need to be peeled off the steering wheel when I arrive. Car commercials, with their carefree drivers speeding down deserted scenic roads, make me laugh.

I wish I hadn't read this post. Those of you who have added to the awful events..........isn't that what you're always saying to QUIT reading on the news?? :~)

This happened here a few weeks ago. A semi driver pulling a tall load hit an overpass causing it to crumble. The driver underneath the bridge at the time was crushed like a bug. Probably never knew what happened. They are going to have to fight it out in courts as each blames the other - county vs owner of trucking company who claims "no es mi culpa".
