i am so sad, and frustrated as well. i do the after school programs in a school with lots of behavior issues. one teacher has previously worked in New Orleans in high poverty areas. She went back to visit and their schools are generally orderly and well managed. i can't think of a week that goes by when i am not aware of a serious behavior issue at our school. we are not specifically for behavior issues, we just have a lot. i know some of the stories and it is heartbreaking but at the end of the day the school and the classrooms are disrupted a lot.
So 2 teachers are leaving, not leaving just this school but leaving teaching altogether. one is just finishing her 5th year, she is great. She has a child in her classroom for the 2nd year that i won't have in my programs, one of the few kids that scare me. i would say she has 3 severe behavior kids and another 3-4 that can have serious behavior when someone around them is like that. the other teacher is finishing her 2nd year and also leaving teaching. She has at least 3 serious kids, some i know well. Both teachers do an excellent job of managing their classrooms, but the kids never end up going anywhere else. they are calmed down and sent back. one kid spent 3 hours in the hallway with the social worker just getting ready to go into the classroom. only one kid was sent to 'boot camp', besides her behavior issues her family has been involved in 2 after school conflicts with other families.
i don't have the answers, it seems like a system that is intertwined in a really dysfunctional way. i feel a little better about leaving teaching myself and after watching this year i am sure that i am not trying to go back anymore.
