Hello. My name is CathyA and I'm a stock tank addict.

Funny......this time I bought a "used" stock tank from Amazon's Warehouse Deals, which I had never bought from before. It was about $25-30 less than a new one, so I thought I'd give it a try. Supposedly, it had some "minor" defects. I prepared myself for it to be a mess..........which probably would have been okay, 'cause I called Amazon and they said if it was really bad, they'd discount it 40% if I still wanted to keep it, or refund me completely if I wanted to send it back. But I did have plants that really needed planted soon.

Well, it came today, and it was perfect! In fact, it was better than the "new" ones I've paid full price for in the past. Weird. Maybe it had been used to store nuclear waste? :~)
Actually, I called before I ordered it to be sure it hadn't been used for anything toxic and she said it was new, just scraped up a bit.

Such a deal I got!
And I just planted some peppers and cherry tomatoes in it.

What a great deal. I never knew you could get "used" from Amazon anything other than audio/media stuff. Cool.

I saw something the other day and it reminded me of previous discussion we'd had about raised beds up off the ground. I saw an old BBQ grill being used to grow a lettuce garden on someone's patio. The perfect height for someone who can't bend over!

I never paid attention to the "used" items on Amazon until this. They are listed underneath the new items on Amazon. I think people's experiences with the used stuff is pretty varied. I'm thinking I was just lucky this time.
I LOVE having these higher off the ground. I have a couple that are 2 cement blocks high off the ground, but the ones in the big garden on just on one block (4 blocks for the 6' long stock tank). But since I put 2" thick board on top of the cement block, and then about 12-18" of soil in the stock tank, it ends up being pretty easy to reach. It's absolutely great to not have to lean over. My legs are so long and my trunk is short, so when I have to lean over to the ground, my stomach ends up in my chest and my brains end up in my ears. It does sound funny, but it ends up causing me to have irregular heartbeats plus GERD......which I can do without! :~)

There's a disadvantage to long legs? You just made my day. :~)

I've been having difficulty with standing water in plastic containers, even when I punch a hole in the bottom I seem to end up with stinky mud. Guess I need more holes? Do you ventilate your stock tanks?

LOL! I'd enjoy my long legs more if my trunk was proportionate. haha
You may need more holes in your containers. Plus, maybe they would do better off the ground? A lot also depends on the type of soil you're using. Mine is pretty light (compost/aged leaves and grass) and the stock tanks are only 1' deep, so my problem is usually having to water them a lot. This time, I drilled fewer holes in them. We'll see how it works.
How big is your container, and how big is that 1 hole?

I have a pot that's about 30" across and about as deep with a hole that's probably 1" across in the bottom. I've also tried putting that sized hole in 5 gallon buckets. And I have what I guess you'd call a stock tank, it's an oval about 4' long and a foot deep, that has a stopcock on one end. I probably over water because things here can go from lush to dust in an afternoon if you neglect them, but lush to mush is no good, either.

What a great find CathyA! Glad you are finding a gardening situation that is keeping you going....what have you planted up until now?
