[iris lilies]

Iris season is drawing to a close. Here are a few images from design sections of recent iris shows. I won Best in Show for design at both early and late iris show at the Missouri Botanical Gardens. Also won Best in Show in the horticultural division at the early show and several section awards at the late show.

Frankly, there aren't many people exhibiting any more. At one time the Greater St. Louis Iris Society had nearly 1000 iris in their horticulture shows, decades ago. Now there are less than 100 stems in the horticulture division.

I haven't been to a flower show in forever. It reminds me of when I was in grade school. It had 4 rooms......1st through 4th. The gym was in the basement, and every Fall they would have a flower show there. The kids would put their favorite flowers in jars (usually canning jars) and set them on the bleachers for everyone to see. What a simple pleasure that was.

P.S.....I especially like how you displayed the second one.....with the old books that are similar in color to the irises.

ah, fair flower shows and 4H shows are like your school shows. That's a good way to teach children a little bit about how to look at flowers and identify varieties, condition, parts of a flower.

The design with faux books was entered in a class with this theme: literature. Each class always has a "theme" but it's best to not be too literal. This one was literal, but won anyway.

I go to garden shows regularly and love the Iris. In the area I live, there are many, many different garden clubs and most have an annual show and sale. Most do not charge entry fees so I try to go to as many as I can. I love seeing the different flowers and plants and of course keep adding a few every time.
