my parents 50th wedding anniversary party is in about 2 weeks (2 weeks from yesterday). they have everything so they really just want a party with everyone and a great photo of everyone from kids to grandkids. the one gift we are giving is 50 quarters, one for every year they have been married. i have been collecting along with my siblings, my brother had many of them from 1965 into the 80's. i just laid them all out and we need 4 of them still. i talked to my aunt to help out, also i am doing more shopping with cash to get quarters. i now and doing laundry with quarters at my apartment which helps since i buy a whole roll of quarters. i am going to run to the store and get a roll for laundry today and i will let you know if i find any more. i can understand the collector mindset a little. if you don't go nuts with it then it is fun to search for that special something.

My middle daughter, the super talented artist (actually all 3 of them are but she gets her art done) has offered to create a display for the quarters. i just looked up some ideas on pinterest as well. Super cool ideas.

You're lucky it's after 1964 - those quarters are hard to come by these days.

If you get stuck on one year or another, post it. I have a jar full of quarters, I wouldn't mind looking.

I found 2009 and 1993 in my bowl of coin. Message me your addy and I'll send these out Tuesday.

Was quite amazed at how I actually had more older coins 1960-1980's than newer coin.
Was tempted to start saving my birth year after I found 2 of those. Then said "whatever for".
Newer coins are harder to read the year than older coins.

i was surprise by the same thing, i keep finding 65 and 66 but i would expect to find the 2010 years easily.

From 1999 to 2009 the US Mint ran the State quarters program. During the programs first year I began collecting each state as they became available. It was a 10 year project but I eventually had complete sets for the grandkids and various nieces and nephews. If you're having problems finding those years, it's probably because nerds like me hot-glued them into state quarter books.

agh you nerds Alan. So i was trying to do the same thing and collect 3 sets for my kids. My son was about 9 or 10 when he found this jar of quarters stashed and though he had hit gold! he could walk to the store so he probably spent it all on candy. then i explained i would have happily given him some spending money but that he know needed to help me collect again, we never really got back to collecting after that. i think i stopped using cash very much.

we have the Denver mint which is actually an interesting tour if you are ever in our city. So for awhile i was trying to save both P's and D's, did you ever get to that point Alan?

No, the state quarters were enough for me. I've still got them all stashed away while their future recipients mature enough to appreciate them.

My MIL did the state quarters for all the grandkids too. I told the boys they could pull the quarters out and buy something instead. I know, I'm unattached, just don't tell my MIL.

Oh for heaves sake, don't worry about it! Please, you've got a million things to do between now and the party for your parents. I just wish I could have come up with the 1975 quarter. The closest I found in DH's stash was 1977.

Just a thought for all those out there "collecting" these quarters or other money for others, like kids. I can almost guarantee they would prefer the money and not another thing to store, clean, move and otherwise try to find a way to get rid of.

Do it for yourself, but dont think that the young or most anyone else cares.

Yeah, I suppose I could give each of the grandkids a Twenty and they'd be way ahead of the game from a money perspective, but I tend to think when they're older they may appreciate something that someone spent 10 years putting together for them. I'm weird that way.

I struck out for 1975 on a whole jar of quarters and it did not seem statistically probable - I checked and found this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Bicentennial_coinage

The United States Bicentennial coinage was a set of circulating commemorative coins, consisting of a quarter, half dollar and dollar struck by the United States Mint in 1975 and 1976. Regardless of when struck, each coin bears the double date 1776–1976 on the normal obverses for the Washington quarter, Kennedy half dollar and Eisenhower dollar. No coins dated 1975 of any of the three denominations were minted.

So you could use a bicentennial quarter for both 1975 and 1976, but I haven't found if there is a way to tell which year a particular coin was struck.
