View Full Version : great new idea for fine/limp hair

I have tried this for a week and really like it. I have super fine hair that I like to wear a little longer than shoulder length but often have to cut it a little shorter. The gray/silver helps because that is a little coarser and fuller, but still a regular challenge.

I read this idea and it is especially for fine hair. You put shampoo only on the roots and then at the same time you put conditioner on the ends. My hair is long enough that I usually put it up in a clip when I have conditioner on and the shampoo is fine sitting a couple minutes. Then rinse it all out. When I did this the other day I was able to do a dry shampoo day after and it looked good still. I use a special extra thick gel for gray/silver hair that helps. The only issue is trying to shampoo only the roots which took some attention.

Zoe Girl, you just described my hair! I am going to try that when I wash my hair tomorrow. I'm sure that would be helpful in keeping my hair looking better a little longer too...

Here's another one for fine hair: wash your hair, but only use conditioner. I did this by accident for a month, and was wondering why I got such good results. I found out when I actually read the label, to see what I was using, so I could buy some more.

Packy, the hair forums call that "CO" - conditioner only. Counter intuitive but it really does work, doesn't it?

What really thickened up my fine hair, was to be pregnant! But that's probably a little too severe just to get thicker hair. :~)
Sometimes, if you have used the same shampoo for a really long time, it builds up on your hair and causes it to lack body. I either would change shampoos, or what I do now is use baby shampoo. Also, after shampooing, I towel dry my hair a bit, and pull it back up in a clip. Sleeping like that makes it feel lots thicker the next day......rather than brushing it out wet after washing it.

I have very long hair now that is not as thick as it used to be. When I wash it, I put conditioner at the bottom of my hair only and then squeeze out the excess water. I never blow dry my hair and the conditioner doesn't seem to leave any build up. My hair is nice and healthy except I am losing hair in the front due to hormones...

I try to wash my hair only every 3 days. I have less breakage and therefore thicker hair. And there are times I'll put conditioner on the bottom 2/3rds and then add a little shampoo on the roots while the conditioner is still on there creating a barrier so that when I go to rinse the shampoo travels over the conditioner since conditioner is harder to get out. I quit using other hair products completely - no moose, no sprays. I wash it at night, air dry and put it up loose for sleeping(use the cut off end of a missing mate sock). It's the healthiest it's been since my pregnancy years (18-19 years ago).

I hate feeling vain but man o man, is that an upsetting place to lose it, especially for a woman. I just don't feel pretty when I look in the mirror any more, no matter what else looks nice I'm focused on that.

My friend uses Rogaine for woman & it has helped her alot. Only thing is you have to use it everyday.

Hi Kib and Teacher Terry,

Yes, it is a horrible feeling for me to look in the mirror and see just a few strands left on one side of the front of my hair and the rest so thin in front...

I had heard of using Rogaine but was told to use the men's five percent. Right now I am on so many meds, I just cannot add any more chemicals to my body, unfortunately. I have told my DH when it gets bad enough I am going to have to resort to wearing a wig...

Kib, how are you dealing with it? Chris

I have tried rogaine and it did help. Or should I say I was using rogaine when my hair was thin and it kept it at a certain level, then when I stopped, the thinning advanced. I don't like a product that makes me dependent, so I decided to stop using it. Still go back and forth about that.

I do use Toppik on occasion, which is basically coloring your scalp with powder to make it match what hair you have. It's somewhat effective, at least at a distance, but sometimes I just miss the feeling of full hair as much as the appearance, and there's no way to get that back.

I have also experimented with wigs, so far I haven't found one that doesn't make me look ridiculous. I don't need a ponytail double the size of my wrist, an extra thumb's worth or two would probably be enough.

Hi again Kib,

I can understand where you are coming from when you say you don't want to dependent on anything. I don't know how I would feel about using that for the rest of my life...

I saw that hair powder but thought that close up people might see the powder.

I read that there is a new hair procedure, not the same as when they would take a whole plug of skin and hair, but just the hair. I have to see if it is factual and see what I think. I would have something like that done...

I know the wigs can look so fake...did you try on a real hair wig? I' just curious how those would be. I think to myself that there must be some great wigs out there since women with cancer or people with aleopecia (sp?) wear them and they seem very natural.

Hey Tussiemussies, I haven't found a place that sells real hair wigs around here and I'm VERY leery of buying one online, there are apparently a massive quantity of fakes and cheap products. I did try something that was real hair attached to a headband, it looked good from the back but silly from the front, my worst thinning is at the temples so it was like I was practically bald and then Wahoo! hair at my ears. One thing I have found, although it might be just wishful thinking, is that when I stop using shampoo and go with my soapnuts mixture, my shedding seems to slow down.

There is a product like toppik but a lot less expensive, I think it's called xfusion. why not give it a shot? I honestly have found it somewhat useful, just don't put it too close to your hairline. I have also tried a spray product but the texture of my hair was horrible, straw dry but yet almost sticky.

Hi again Kib,

Just thinking you might be able to locate online one of the foundations that collect hair for cancer patients etc. and see if they could recommend some real hair wig stores that wouldn't be all too far for you to drive...there was a relative through my brother's marriage that had and overcame Cancer and wore a wig and I heard it looked great on her...

I'm not into spraying anything into my hair, so we will have to see what happens...

Chris
