Yay, one for our side. I am compleley happy about this.
I have a shooting buddy who is transgendered (male to female) and identifies as Republican, as well. She's pro-LGBT, but otherwise, very conservative.
Identity politickers everywhere are dumbfounded.
That's one way to solve the "gender gap".
In fairness there has been a T in LGBT at LGR for while now, but is interesting to see this level of visibility.

Regardless of her personal political opinions she has certainly presented the republican presidential candidates with a discussion topic I'm sure they'd prefer not to have. It's going to be fun watching them try to balance their desire to get young voters versus the need to not piss off their social conservative voting base.

My experience from participating as a delegate during the last presidential election cycle is that the party has little real concern with either of those things, and is more concerned with simply retaining control of the party. A pox on them.
Within the party i assume they'll certainly try to pretend it isn't an issue. Whether among the press and general population people will be so forgiving is yet to be seen.

Forgiving of what?
Of the Republican politicians' desire to not have to talk about Caitlyn Jenner and the larger issue of LGBT equality. The R candidates' acceptance or lack of acceptance of Caitlyn's decision to come out a trans is a lose lose situation for them. On the one hand a sizable segment of the republican base is not in favor of acceptance of trans people and on the other the younger generation, even if they lean republican, is much more accepting of equality for LGBT people. The candidates can either agree with their base or they can try to attract new voters. Doing both would seem to be a remarkably difficult task.

Equal treatment by the government.
Equal treatment by the government. How are they treated differently?
In federal law There are apparently over 1,000 benefits, rights and priveleges that are only abilable to one's spouse under federal law. Discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation prevents a group of people from accessing them.

It's hard to see how either the GOP base or the public in general (even "young people") would consider Jenner's personal life to be a decisive electoral issue.
It's certainly debatable whether the public's intense interest in her will translate into votes one way or the other. if nothing else, though, her coming out and doing a highly watched and tweeted about interview with Diane Sawyer certainly keeps the topic of LGBT issues front and center for the time being.
Given the carefulness with which republican presidential candidates answered the question 'would you attend a gay wedding' a few weeks ago I still suspect that the candidates wish Caitlyn would just quietly go away.
My view is that the gossip industry will have moved on to something else by this time next week. There seem to be enough real fiscal, constitutional and foreign policy issues out there that assessing the sensitivity metrics of any given politician will not be the decisive consideration.
LDAHL I think you are an idealist if you suspect the press will even attempt to deal with real fiscal, constitutional and foreign policy issues. Much more interest apparently in sensitivity issues that in the long run tell us very little about the kind of leader a person will be. I am sadly disillusioned with the 24 hour news cycle. I thought, foolishly, that it would mean seeing in depth reporting....in depth investigations and all it is is one hour of trash 24 times.

That's how I feel about Jenner. Yes, I am glad to be living in a time when all the parts of LGB -and- T are rapidly gaining wider acceptance. (It will be nice when the acronym is no longer needed at all.). If Ms. Jenner's story helps promote that, fine, its a good thing. That's all I care about it. Beyond that, I'd really rather spend my time seeking out news about things that could significantly impact my life (climate change, the TPP, several local issues, etc.) than I would listening to more blabber from the celebrity gossip cult of network news.
+1
My problem with Jenner is that she's ... dare I say it ... Kardashian. For me, any good message about equality or independent spirit or living your beliefs is totally lost under that blanket of mindless hollywood trash gossip that's been dumped on us for however many years now. I actually saw the Diane Sawyer interview, and thought Jenner appeared to be drunk. For me, Jenner is a lot like Al Gore was to the repubs - the message Less well-heard because I don't like the messenger. Not because she's trans, but because she's got a history as a fluffy idiot.
