View Full Version : Getting glue off the AAA membership cards
The glue AAA is using to attach their cards to the statement has changed and now it's a sticky mess on all of our membership cards that came. Any suggestions as to what to use to get the glue off, without hurting the cards? I was afraid to try acetone, for fear it would take everything off. I've never had much luck with this kind of glue on things.
If it's like bubble gum, try putting some peanut butter on and letting it sit, then wipe with a towel, then put straight dish detergent on and rub it around and wipe again, then wash. Don't get it wet until after you've wiped off as much glue-goo as possible. You might have to do it more than once. I've used this with success on labels on glass bottles, sometimes it works and sometimes not. Don't use acetone. You could also try the opposite route and dust them with talcum powder and then rub at them - keep adding talc so the glue balls up and doesn't stick to your fingers.

Since you have a Triple A membership, why not call the number and ask, and also state that you wish they stuck with the old glue. If enough do it, they may take notice.
Well shoot.....I emailed AAA to ask what they suggested (while getting in my irritation of them changing the glue). This is on 4 of our family cards and I've dealt with it on other things and it just never really comes off well. Who wants dust/hairs/lint collecting on their AAA card? Well........they emailed me back saying they sent me 4 new cards. Great.........I never get plastic gift cards because of the unrecyclable plastic. I guess I should have at least tried some things before emailing them.......even just putting scotch tape over the gooey areas. Oh well.
But thanks for your suggestions Kib.
So now you'll have 8 cards with glue, right?
As a little extra "pay off the debt job" I've been working 2 evenings a week at the mall office where I can give people with AAA a coupon book for the mall. It's fun and easy but yes...I have noticed lately that some people with new cards have a sticky residue. I've had to help a few of them pry the card off another card or out of their wallet. If I'm not careful it may mess up the card reader swipe thingy on the computer.
Oh! So I'm not crazy that they've changed the glue! haha
It sounds like such a stupid little thing to be worried about, but it can be a real pain to have stuff stick to these things all the time.
And you're right, Float On........they'll send me the new cards with the exact same problem! :(

Yes! Everyone call and complain! My membership renews in the fall, so I hope you all persuade them to use something else before then. :)
I don't know why companies have to use that stuff, when there are alternative types of glue that come off very easily. Maybe those are just more expensive.
I got a nice grater last year with a clear cover on it and a huge label covering most of the cover. I tried everything to get that glue under the label off with everything possible, and eventually had to use steel wool. Since the looks of the cover didn't matter to me, I kept it, even though the cover was totally scratched up. I've seen others complain about it on Amazon too. You'd think manufacturers would think these things through.
I guess it's one of those 1st world problems, eh? ::~)
CathyA, I agree with you. I've bought several kitchen items and, after soaking for days, I still had a lot of difficulty getting the stickers off. Like you, some things ended up scratched, which I don't appreciate. But your conclusion is so true about 1st world problems---guess it's an aggravation, not a real problem.

One other suggestion, ask if they have a membership keychain, instead of a card.

Have you tried Goo Gone?
or the Mr. Clean magic eraser?
I just got HUD stickers off the doors of my house by rubbing straight Palmolive dish detergent on the with a rag--it was amazing.

Do you guys use Goo Be Gone? It lifts off everything I've tried it on. It leaves a greasy residue which inthe was off with Dawn dish soap.
I wonder of it depends on where you are? I just got mine today - nothing stuck to the card when I peeled it off the statement. Or removing the sticker in the front.
Well, the woman I talked to said she'd send out 4 new cards. I'm glad she didn't follow through. I had tried to remove the goo from the cards and just couldn't get it off. The other day, I took another look at it, and tried to peel one corner of the gooey area......and it peeled off! Don't know why I couldn't do it initially.

Some glues have a curing time and I am wondering if it had to flash over (harden) to be able to adhere to itself rather then absorb itself.
I hope that was the case ToomuchStuff, and I wasn't just being Stoopid. :~)
