View Full Version : Considering switch from DSL to FIOS

We've had the higher-speed DSL for many years now and we've been pretty satisfied. This past year however, we've had some loss of internet connectivity instances that were pretty bothersome. Today I was scheduled to work from home (a treat!), and due to our inability to connect to the internet for more than a couple of minutes at a time, I ended up dashing to get dressed and pull things together to catch a late bus into the office. Aggravating, and I lost about 3 productive hours all told. Tonight everything works just fine again!
DH thinks it may be because DSL is an older technology that isn't getting much support, and that we would do better to switch to FIOS. Does anyone know if that's a valid assumption? Should we be looking at our wireless modem as the possible culprit instead (Netgear, about 3 years old)?
Verizon is offering a $79.99 bundle for phone, TV & FIOS. Does anyone know if we can get that type of deal without TV? I don't even know if our 1990's TV can accept cable. We're currently paying $103./mo for landline & DSL, so the bundle price sounds good to me.
I'm out of my element here and would appreciate any input.

Your tv probably has a coax input. If it does, then you should be able to use their connection (as a lot of services now require encrypted boxes that connect to your tv via coax). If your tv has the older style twin screw leads, that require an adapter, then I don't know if it will work.
That said, you could price the bundle both with and without tv and if it is cheaper with the tv (like cablemodem and tv is here), just don't hook up the tv.
It is worth checking your modem, both by watching your signal (do you stay in one spot), as well as trying a wired connection (get a long network cable if need be for the test). You may have something interfering, or you could have a modem issue itself. If you change service your modem will change. This didn't get into any firewall question, as I am assuming since you said wireless modem, it has a built in NAT box.
I know the phone company doesn't push DSL here anymore, but their Uverse service. I had a couple relatives on that, until Google fibre hit their area's.
