Apple tv, two sizes, Roku box and Roku stick available. I don't use these so I don't know how current the models are but I've heard people say they use these to save

First question: do you have cable TV?
I ask because my neighbor was all a twitter about us getting a Roku box because it would save us money and we are always into saving money so she thought. But since we don't have cable tv, there would be no savings. Still, I am a little bit interested in Roku but from what I saw of the cable networks on her Roku, my favorite HGTV was not listed. Probably just as well since I would be glued to it 24/7.
Its not clear to me why some cable channels are available via Roku and others are not.

We have a basic ROKU unit (cost around $50), but it requires an internet provider, not cable TV. ROKU is a streaming device via the Internet and you can read about the features at their web site - https://www.roku.com/. Not sure about Apple TV, but I'm sure their web site will give you the information you need.
We subscribe to Netflix ($7.99/month), Acorn ($4.99/month), and The Blaze ($99/year) and watch them via ROKU. We are big fans of everything British and are saving a LOT of money because we were purchasing everything on DVD. We now only have Basic Cable, so we are saving money there, too.

Ok, so you have cable tv. The idea with Roku saving anyone money--I believe-- is cut your cable subscription and to use your internet wifi to receive cable signal. I've assumed that you have internet because you come to this website.
Just as an aside, Acorn does great British shows. But again, for saving money, why buy dvds or even a subscription? What's the collection like of your public library? My library bought every British show ever produced on DVD. I will admit that I DO have a one-disc-at-a-time DVD membership to Netflix for supplementing the Library's collection. But I could cut that out if really stretched.

first, I only posted these hoping the info would help others I've heard discussion about them. I don't think they would help us, we have tivos that last forever.
2 yrs ago, DD and I joined forces with my folks, selling our homes to get a handicapped accessible ranch for my ill mother. I could cut the cable cord easily, Netflix streaming, Hulu and library would be find with me. But my DDad has ended up taking care of me during a long health crisis and my mom. He is not into fancy toys or materialistic things but he LOVES cable. We had a talk about the expense (he likes Showtime and HBO), the cost does not affect his budget. So I called and negotiated a better package and left it alone. Really it's his whole entertainment budget, he does not enjoy movies or plays, he has 600 (probably junk) books he managed to get for free for his Nook. So who am I to judge and I admit, I enjoy access to HBO and Showtime. For now I am paying for it, but this is coming out of savings until I get disability. He may need to split this one with me.
Sometimes I think with cable, why do I have netflix streaming and hulu plus? But my sick mom uses netlfix constantly, she loves independent film and documentaries about just about anything. Who knew I'd be watching Werner Herzog with my elderly mother? It's been wonderful to see her engaged, I filled my queue with over 300 things for her (and me) to watch and there's always more coming. DD and DS use my subscription, too. So that's a keeper. Hulu Plus I am not so sure about, I hate commercials, I hate how sporadic it is about posting the most recent past season of a series. I haven't really scratched the surface there, but kids use it. It will be the first thing to go, however
the sheer amount of material available in so many ways is truly mind boggling

ah, OP, I see. I thought your first post was a question, more or less.
never mind. But I agree that if your dad gets lots of value out of a full cable subscription, then why not have it.
