i went to a weekend conference on mindfulness in education and besides the excellent program i noticed a lot of great outfits that women in my age range (and my tribe!) were wearing. linen skirts caught my eye.

So i got some nice patterned linen that was a little lightweight, so i got plain off white linen as well. i envisioned a double layer linen skirt, A line style, but ended up doing more of a traditional pencil skirt. it is such a simple pattern that even doing 2 layers i sewed it up in a couple of hours. putting in a zipper in a skirt with basically a lining was a new thing and it went really well.

i have some pants i totally stalled out on, but i will get them done soon enough. i had a friend lose weight and pass down a lot of nice clothes

That's great! I love linen. I put my first zipper in a wool cardigan sweater that I knit a few months ago. I had heard that zippers were difficult, but I just hand stitched it in with the backstitch. It was actually fun. It sounds like you're doing a lot of sewing. It's so rewarding to make the things you wear. I just finished knitting another cotton/linen tank top. I have four of them. They are ideal for the hot weather. Good luck with the pants. It sounds like you're on a roll...

Zoe, it sounds like you are very good at sewing. I would never be able to put together s pencil skirt in a snap...a great talent to have!

Awakened, so great that you were able to handstitch your zipper in. I need a teacher now for sewing, I have taught myself all that I can and I need to learn how to put a zipper in!

there are people who teach sewing, i have done it before. i go through a service for tutoring called wyzant to advertise myself and they handle all the payments. i have only done sewing instruction with them once but it is a good place to look for a teacher.

Tussiemussies, I just googled it and watched a video. You can learn so much for free on line now. The main thing was having a zipper that was the exact length of the sweater. It was much easier than I expected. The teeth are already lined up in the zipper. It was very rewarding.

There's something about sewing, mending, and knitting/crocheting that is calming to me. It's grounding, and puts you in the now. It takes time and patience, but when you finish, it's very satisfying to wear something that you made.
