i am sure this belongs somewhere but i couldn't decide, fitness? Hobbies? spiritual (i was praying part of the time)

So if you look up Brainerd lake rec area in colorado and see the pictures of Lake isabella and isabelle glacier that is where i went today. including the hike from the parking it was about 10 miles and about 2,000 ft elevation gain topped out at 12,000 ft. i hated part of it, truly. the cairns over the rock field were scarce, possibly from all the extreme weather we had for months. i was climbing and crawling over a rock field and saw people walking on a trail! duh, so i lost the trail 2 times, i did learn i could navigate myself back to the trail which made me feel even better about my hiking skills rather than i felt stupid for losing the trail.

then i saw flight for life there, circling large for a long time and then closer on the area an injured hiker was at. they landed some rescuers at the lake i was resting at which was still a mile or more hike to the glacier where the injured hiker appeared to be, it was going on for hours, what i saw was about 3 hours and the hiker wasn't down when i left. no matter how i hated part of my hike i am so grateful that i was safe. i am watching for news but it isn't on the local news site yet.

what went great was my wooden hiking stick and that i packed well. My stick helped so much when i was going through marsh or over rock to test where i was going to step next. And i needed one bandaid, which i had. plenty of water, plenty of food and the basic emergency stuff. Gosh it irritates me to see hikers with one water bottle and no first aid or food for an 8-10 mile trip.

in september i am going on a retreat that is largely outdoors in garden of the gods and surrounding areas. we will have group time in the morning and evening and every day we go out and do our meditation practice along with walking/hiking practice solo with check in procedures. it feels good to train, Not bad for 48 and asthma!

Sounds like you had an exciting time! Good for you, but hopefully that injured hiker is okay. I looked up images on google, it looks beautiful there. I would have loved to go hiking and swimming in the lake. The retreat sounds like it will be fun.

Zoe - out of curiosity, what gear/supplies did you take with you on this hike?

That is a beautiful spot, I've been there before, I am so jealous :-)

hi bae, i thought you may ask, i was pretty simple since it is a highly populated area.
* first aid, bandaids, larger bandaids and gauze, hand sanitizer and more sunscreen, bandana, inhaler,
* lots of water, the bladder thing and 2 bottles (got back with water left)
* longer sleeve shirt and lightweight waterproof jacket
* one of those tiny packed silver emergency blankets
* lunch plus
* a whistle! and my walking stick

Anything else you would suggest for a day hike? i realize i didn't have any sort of pocket knife later

Good for you! Ahhhh, hiking...that I sorely miss! Envisioning my hike up to Crater lake in the Maroon Bells back in June. Not that I have any mountains to hike here in Michigan, but I miss just walking and hiking around. Countdown to x-rays of the foot next Friday.

good luck on those xrays, some year you should come here and i would hike with you. i have never done maroon bells or a lot of hikes. i stick to familiar when hiking alone.
