We are getting ready to move and are cleaning out the house. Yesterday we had our second garage sale to get rid of "stuff". So far three of our neighbors have asked if they could drop stuff off to add to our garage sale. I told each of them no.... that I had an issue with a friend previously regarding their garage sale items and did not want that to happen again. I find this very irritating. I do not want to have to track what of theirs sold, pack up and move their stuff etc.. I would never ask anyone to do this. I feel if they want to get rid of stuff.. have your own garage sale. We have enough to do without adding to the foray!

I would tell them exactly that. They're not moving; you are. Now, if they want to go find a change box and sit there for hours staffing the sale, so that's off your list, maybe it's worth talking about. But if it's more than you want to take on right now, I would just say that, ordinarily, you'd be fine with that, but right now time is of the essence.

You're never going to see these people again, right? :~)

Oh agreed, it's a big pain to sell for others. But then I find garage sales to be pretty useless.

I had one once; it was the hardest I ever worked for a couple hundred dollars. Never again.

This is true. We lived in this house over 30 years and have accumulated. We feel this is a good way to repurpose. Things not sold are packed up and given to St Vincent's after each sale. Just before we move we will have them come and get the furniture and remainder. This will be the last time we do garage sales too. We will have a permanent container and when it is full of things we do not want ... it will be given to the thrift store. I plan on doing as they used to do in the "olden" days and do spring cleaning too. Thanks for letting me vent!

I have done a ton of garage sales, some for myself & some when friends were moving, 1 when they were losing their home. Last year I helped friends do 2 & by the end of the second one I was really cranky. I then said I am 60 & no more. Some of them we made little $ & others a $1000 or more. I told all my friends-do not ask me to help. Now I just donate. They are a ton of work.

would they run the yard sale for you? that would be a win-win after all. Be clear what they would be expected to do. they take care of their stuff and yours for the bonus of combining the yard sales, my huge move i had my kids run the yard sale and keep the money. they sold stuff for nothing but it was slightly better than donating.

the last move, i donated pretty much everything. with 30 years of stuff you would likely make money

why don't you suggest that they have their own mini garage sale on the same day. I see this all the time, people all over the street selling stuff.

For a few years we had a yard sale that involved anyone on the block who wanted to sell - or who wanted to come to our block and set up a table. Selling things for other people is just too complicated, but the bigger participation events with everyone keeping track of their own stuff made better sales for everyone.
